Taking just one deep, diaphragmatic breath can lower your heart rate by three to five beats per minute. In our last session, the Box Breathing Reset, we used a four-count structure to manage the breath. Today, we go to the source. Find a comfortable position. Seated in a chair, back supported. Or lying on the floor. Whatever allows your body to feel held. Let your hands rest in your lap for a moment.
And if you feel safe doing so, allow your eyes to close. Just arrive here. In this body. In this moment. Notice the air on your skin. The points of contact between your body and the surface beneath you. You don’t need to do anything. Just be. Now, take your right hand and place it on your chest, right over your heart. Take your left hand and place it on your belly, just above your navel.
For the next few breaths, just notice what you feel. Don't change a thing. Simply observe which hand moves more. The one on your chest… or the one on your belly. Most of us live our lives breathing into our chest. Short. Shallow. It’s a stress response we’ve adopted as normal. We’re going to change that right now. All your focus now is on the hand on your belly. On your next inhale, I want you to imagine sending the air down past your chest, deep into the lowest part of your lungs.
Breathe in through your nose, and make your belly expand. Push that lower hand out. The hand on your chest should stay relatively still. And now, a long, slow exhale through your mouth. Let your belly fall. Feel the hand sink back toward your spine. That’s it. That’s the entire practice. Let’s do it again. A slow, deep inhale through the nose. Send it down. Feel the belly rise.
One… two… three… four. Hold it for just a second. And a slow, controlled exhale through the mouth. Feel the belly contract. One… two… three… four… five… six. Good. Again. Inhale deep into the belly. Feel the expansion. Your diaphragm is dropping down, massaging your internal organs, telling your nervous system it is safe. Exhale and release. Let it all go. Any tension in your jaw, your shoulders… let it melt away with the out-breath.
The hand on your chest is a guide. If it’s rising and falling a lot, that’s okay. It’s just information. Gently redirect your focus. Send the breath lower. Deeper. Imagine you have a balloon in your stomach, and you’re inflating it with each inhale… and slowly deflating it with each exhale. Let go of my voice now. For the next minute, just you and your breath. The slow rise… and the gentle fall.
Find your own rhythm. No forcing. Just allowing. This is your body’s natural state of rest. It’s not something you have to earn. It’s always here, waiting for you. Slowly, gently, begin to bring your awareness back. Wiggle your fingers and toes. Notice the temperature of the air in the room. When you’re ready, you can let your hands fall back to your lap. And slowly, open your eyes.
You didn’t create this calm. You just cleared the space for it to be found. Carry it with you.
