Breathing out for longer than you breathe in is the fastest way to signal safety to your vagus nerve. In our last daily breathwork reset, we focused on finding that intentional calm. Today, we give that intention a powerful, specific structure designed to activate your body’s natural relaxation response in minutes. This technique is called 4-7-8 breathing.

It works. Not in theory, but in practice. It’s a tool you can use anywhere. So let’s begin. Find a comfortable position. Seated is good, with your back straight but not stiff. You can also lie down. Let your hands rest in your lap. Unclench your jaw. Let your shoulders drop away from your ears. Close your eyes if that feels right for you.

Now, place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth. You’ll keep it there for the entire exercise. First, just exhale completely through your mouth. Make a gentle whoosh sound. Get all the air out. Good. Now close your mouth and get ready. We will inhale quietly through the nose for a count of four.

Hold the breath for a count of seven. And exhale completely through your mouth with that whoosh sound for a count of eight. That is one full breath. We will do five together. Let’s begin. Close your mouth. Inhale through your nose… two… three… four. Hold your breath… two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale through your mouth… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight.

That’s one. Again. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight. Don’t force it. Let the breath be easy. Inhale through your nose… two… three… four. Hold the breath… two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale with a whoosh… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight.

Two more cycles. You’re doing great. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight. Last one. Make it your calmest yet. Inhale… two… three… four. Hold… two… three… four… five… six… seven. Exhale… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight. Now just let your breath return to normal.

Breathing in and out through your nose. Keep your eyes closed for another moment. Notice the shift. Notice the stillness in your body. The space between your thoughts. This isn’t magic. It’s physiology. You just used your breath to change your state. You told your nervous system that you are safe. And it listened. When you’re ready, you can gently open your eyes.

This calm is always here for you. One breath away.
