Just five minutes of deep belly breathing can lower your cortisol levels by up to twenty-three percent. In our last session, we used the 4-7-8 pattern to find calm. Today, we go deeper than the pattern. We go to the source. Find a comfortable position. Seated in a chair, or lying on your back. It doesn't matter. Just be somewhere you won't be interrupted. If it feels right for you, gently close your eyes.
Bring your awareness to your body. Feel the points of contact between you and the surface beneath you. The weight of your body, held. Now, place one hand on your chest, high up on your sternum. Place your other hand on your belly, right over your navel. Just for a moment, don't change a thing. Simply notice your breath as it is right now. Feel the movement under your hands.
Which hand is moving more? For most of us, most of the time, it's the top hand. The chest rises and falls. That’s the body’s habit. The signature of stress. We're here to offer it a different way. On your next inhale, I want you to guide the breath. Don't force it. Just guide it. Send it down past your chest, past your ribs… all the way down into your belly. Imagine you are filling a balloon deep inside you.
The goal is to feel your lower hand rise, while your top hand stays relatively still. Let’s try it together. A slow, deep inhale through your nose… send it down… feel your belly gently expand into your palm. And now a long, slow exhale through your mouth. Feel the belly fall. The hand lowers. Let it all go. Again. Inhale through the nose… belly rises. The chest is quiet.
Exhale through the mouth… belly falls. Releasing. Your shoulders are soft. Your jaw is unclenched. Let the small muscles around your eyes relax. The only work happening is deep in your core. That is your diaphragm, the great muscle of breath, doing its job. This might feel strange. Even difficult. That’s okay. You are retraining a system that has been on autopilot. Be patient.
Inhale… belly expands. Exhale… belly contracts. With each exhale, consciously let something go. The tension you hold in your neck. The thought that just popped into your head. The deadline. Let it drift away with the breath. You don't need to fight your thoughts. Just give them less attention than you give your breath. Your breath is your anchor. To this moment. To this body.
Feel the air. Cool as it enters your nose. Warmer as it leaves your mouth. There is nothing else you need to do right now. Nowhere else you need to be. Just this. Let's take three more breaths together. Make them the deepest, most intentional ones yet. Inhale… fill the belly all the way up. Hold it for just a second at the top. Feel that fullness. And exhale… a complete and total release.
Two more. In your own time. One last one. Breathe in. And let it go. When you feel ready, you can let your hands come to rest in your lap. Bring a little awareness back to the room around you. The sounds. The temperature of the air on your skin. And then, gently, open your eyes. Notice the shift. The quiet inside. This state is always available to you. Your body knows how to do this.
You just gave it permission.
