Taking just six deep, diaphragmatic breaths can lower your blood pressure by several points. In our last session, we worked on a daily reset to recharge your energy. Today we go deeper, into the physical mechanism that makes that reset possible—the one you were born with, but may have forgotten how to use. Find a comfortable position. Seated or lying down. It doesn't matter. What matters is that your spine is long and your body can soften.
Go ahead and close your eyes if that feels right. Place one hand on your chest, right over your heart. And place your other hand on your belly, just above your navel. For a moment, just breathe normally. Don't change anything. Simply notice the movement under your hands. Which hand is moving more? For most of us, it’s the top hand. We live in our chests. Anxious. Shallow. We’re going to change that. Right now.
The goal is simple. The hand on your chest will stay still. The hand on your belly will rise and fall. Let all the air out of your lungs. A gentle sigh. Get empty. Now, through your nose, take a slow breath IN. But don’t breathe up into your chest. Breathe DOWN. Imagine your lungs filling from the bottom up, like pouring water into a glass. Feel your belly expand, pushing your lower hand outward. The top hand stays quiet.
Keep inhaling... a little more... And now, a slow, controlled exhale through your mouth. Feel your belly fall back toward your spine. The lower hand comes in. The top hand is still quiet. That’s one. Let’s do it again. Breathe in through your nose, down into the belly. Feel it swell like a balloon. Three... two... one... Hold it for just a moment at the top. And release. A slow, steady stream of air out.
Let it all go. Feel the tension leaving with it. This is it. This is the work. It’s not complicated. It’s just... unfamiliar. Your diaphragm is a muscle. A powerful, dome-shaped muscle at the base of your lungs. Most of the time, we don't use it. We sip air into the top of our lungs and call it breathing. This is different. This is breathing fully. Let’s find a rhythm. In through the nose, belly rises. Out through the mouth, belly falls.
Inhale, creating space. Your ribs expand to the sides, your belly pushes forward. You are taking up more room. Exhale, letting go completely. Releasing. Softening. Keep going. On your own count now. The hand on your chest is an anchor. A reminder. If it starts to move, guide the breath back down. Back to your center. This is your body’s natural state of calm. You are not creating it. You are returning to it.
This is the gear you’ve been looking for. The switch that tells your entire nervous system that you are safe. That you can rest. Take one more deep, intentional breath. The fullest one yet. Fill the belly completely. And as you exhale, let your hands fall away. Let them rest in your lap or by your sides. Let your breath return to its natural rhythm. No effort. No control. Just notice the change. The stillness.
The quiet hum inside you. This feeling is not temporary. It’s a place you can return to. Six breaths is all it takes to start. When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes. You carry this calm with you now.
