Six deep breaths a minute can measurably lower your blood pressure. In our last session, we focused on recharging with intentional breathing. Today, we go deeper into the engine that drives that reset: your diaphragm. This is the practice that works when theory fails. When you don't have an hour. When you only have five minutes and a world of pressure. So find a comfortable seat.
Or lie down if you can. Whatever lets your body feel fully supported. Allow your eyes to gently close. Place one hand on the center of your chest. Place the other hand on your belly, just above your navel. This isn't just for show. These are your sensors. Your feedback. The hand on your chest is your guide. We want it to stay relatively still. Quiet. The hand on your belly is your target.
This is where you'll feel the movement. This is where the work happens. Let all the air out of your lungs. A gentle sigh. Now, a slow, deep breath in through your nose. Send the breath all the way down. Feel your belly expand like a balloon, pressing firmly into your lower hand. Your chest stays calm. Hold it for just a moment. And a long, slow exhale, through your mouth or nose.
Feel your belly fall, drawing back in toward your spine as you empty your lungs completely. Let's find a rhythm together. Inhale through the nose for four... three... two... one. Feel the belly rise. Exhale slowly for six... five... four... three... two... one. Feel the belly contract. Your chest is quiet. Your shoulders are soft. All the movement is low. Deep in your core.
Again. Inhale. Filling up from the bottom. Your lower hand rises. Exhale. Gently emptying. Your lower hand falls. This is diaphragmatic breathing. You're using the full capacity of your lungs. You're activating the vagus nerve, which tells your entire nervous system to slow down. To downshift. Let's do three more rounds. I'll count the first one, then you take the next two on your own.
Inhale... two... three... four. Exhale... two... three... four... five... six. Good. One more on your own. The rise... and the fall. Right here. In this quiet rhythm. This is the reset. You are not just breathing. You are sending a direct signal to every cell in your body. The signal is simple. It says: you are safe. You are in control. The to-do list can wait. The notifications can wait.
The noise of the day falls away. The only thing that matters is the feeling of your belly rising against your hand. And the feeling of it falling back. Notice the brief stillness at the top of the inhale. And the quiet emptiness at the bottom of the exhale. That space between... that's the point of recharge. The system coming back online, clear and calm. Now, keeping your eyes closed, let your breath return to its natural pace.
Let your hands come to rest in your lap. Bring your awareness back into the room. Notice the temperature of the air on your skin. The feeling of the surface beneath you, holding you up. When you're ready, gently wiggle your fingers. And your toes. Bringing small movements back into the body. Take one final deep breath in, the deepest one yet. Fill all the way up.
And let it all go with a sigh. Gently blink your eyes open. Welcome back. You just changed your body's chemistry in under five minutes. This tool is always with you.
