A 2013 study showed that just five minutes of alternate nostril breathing can significantly lower your heart rate. Not in theory. In practice. Last time, in episode twenty-one, we used the power of your diaphragm to reset your system. Today we use that same intentional breath to bring your body into balance. So find a comfortable seat.
Let your spine grow tall. Allow your eyes to close, or soften your gaze toward the floor. Just arrive here. In this chair. In this moment. Notice the air on your skin. The feeling of your feet on the ground. Take one deep breath in through your nose. And let it all go. Now, bring your right hand up toward your face. We're going to create a simple shape with your fingers.
Fold your index finger and your middle finger down, so they rest on your palm. Your thumb, your ring finger, and your pinky finger are extended. This is the only tool you need. Your thumb will gently close your right nostril. Your ring finger will gently close your left. Bring your hand to your nose. Rest your thumb lightly on your right nostril.
Rest your ring finger lightly on your left. No pressure yet. Take a deep breath in through both nostrils. And a full breath out. Empty completely. Now. Gently press your right thumb to close your right nostril. And inhale through your left nostril. Slow and steady. For four… three… two… one. Close your left nostril with your ring finger. Both are closed for just a moment.
Release your thumb, and exhale through your right nostril. All the way out. Six… five… four… three… two… one. Stay here. Inhale through this same right nostril. For four… three… two… one. Close the right nostril with your thumb. A brief hold. Release your ring finger, and exhale through the left nostril. Slowly. For six… five… four… three… two… one.
That is one full round. You’ve got the rhythm now. We will continue. Inhale, left. Exhale, right. Inhale, right. Exhale, left. Inhale, left. Smooth and easy. Exhale, right. Inhale, right. Let the breath be effortless. Exhale, left. Continue on your own. Follow that same pattern. In left, out right. In right, out left. There is no rush. There is only your breath.
I’ll be quiet for a few moments. Finish the cycle you are on. Ending with an exhale through your left nostril. When you’re done, release your hand down to your lap. Keep your eyes closed. Breathe normally, through both nostrils. And just notice. Notice the stillness. The quiet in your mind. The feeling of air moving freely. Notice the equilibrium you can access, anytime you need it.
You just did the work. You did not find balance. You created it.
