A 2013 study found that just fifteen minutes of alternate nostril breathing lowered participants' heart rate and blood pressure. In our last session, we found a reset through simple, balanced breath. Today, we take that idea of balance and make it physical. We’re going to harmonize the two sides of your body, the two hemispheres of your brain, with a practice called Nadi Shodhana.
It sounds complicated. It’s not. It’s just a pattern. And it works. Find a comfortable, tall seat. Your spine long. Shoulders soft, away from your ears. Let your eyes drift closed. Take one deep breath in through your nose. And let it all go out your mouth. Now, bring your right hand up toward your face. Fold your first two fingers—your index and middle finger—down toward your palm.
You’ll use your thumb to close your right nostril, and your ring finger to close your left. A gentle touch is all you need. Rest your ring finger lightly on your left nostril and your thumb on your right. First, gently press your right thumb to close your right nostril. Exhale completely through your left side. All the air out. Now, inhale slowly through that same left nostril.
To a count of four. One… two… three… four. At the top of the breath, close your left nostril with your ring finger. Release your thumb from your right nostril. And exhale slowly through the right side. Four… three… two… one. Stay here. Inhale through your right nostril. One… two… three… four. Close the right side with your thumb. Release your ring finger. Exhale through your left.
Four… three… two… one. That is one full round. You’ve done the hardest part. Now we just repeat the pattern. Let's begin again, together. Inhale left… one… two… three… four. Close. Exhale right… one… two… three… four. Inhale right… one… two… three… four. Close. Exhale left… one… two… three… four. Another round. Inhale left… slow and steady. Close. Exhale right… releasing completely.
Inhale right… filling up. Close. Exhale left… letting go. Now, for the next few rounds, continue on your own. Find a rhythm that feels steady. Not rushed. Not forced. The mind will try to wander. That’s its job. Your job is just to notice, and come back to the count. Come back to the feeling of the breath moving from one side to the other. The simple, physical act of switching sides gives your analytical mind something to hold.
It anchors you. This isn’t about forcing calm. It’s about creating the conditions for it to arrive. Just the breath. In and out. One side, then the other. Complete the round you’re on. The pattern always finishes with an exhale through the left nostril. No rush. When you’re done, release your hand down to your lap. Palms up or down, whatever feels right. Keep your eyes closed for another moment.
Breathe normally, through both nostrils now. And just notice. Notice the quality of the air. The quiet in your mind. The stillness in your body. You didn’t find this balance. You created it. One breath at a time. Carry this quiet center with you into your day. It’s always here. When you’re ready, slowly, gently, open your eyes. The work is done.
