You take about twenty-three thousand breaths every single day. Last time, we focused on activating your body’s natural reset. Today, we go to the source of that calm. We are going to use the master key. So let’s begin. Find a comfortable position. Lying down is best for this. Flat on your back on the floor, or on your bed. Knees bent or legs long, whatever feels better for your lower back.

If you’re seated, find a posture that’s upright but not rigid. Feet flat on the floor. When you’re settled, gently close your eyes. Place one hand on your chest, right over your heart. Place your other hand on your belly, just above your navel. For a moment, do nothing. Just feel the weight of your hands on your body. Now, bring your awareness to your breath.

Don’t change it. Just notice it. Feel the air coming in, and the air going out. Notice which hand is moving more. For most of us, it’s the hand on the chest. We live in a state of shallow, urgent breathing. A habit of stress. We're going to change that. Right now. The work is to keep the hand on your chest still… and let the hand on your belly be the one that rises and falls.

This is diaphragmatic breathing. It’s the way you breathed as a baby. It is the body’s signal for safety. Let’s start. Gently exhale all the air from your lungs. A soft sigh out through your mouth. Get empty. Now, through your nose, inhale slowly for a count of four. Send the breath down, past your chest, into your belly. Feel your belly expand and lift your hand.

One… two… three… four. Hold the breath at the top. Softly. No tension. For a count of two. One… two. Now, a long, slow exhale through your mouth. Let your belly fall back toward your spine. Six… five… four… three… two… one. Let’s do that again. Inhale through the nose, deep into the belly. One… two… three… four. Feel the rise. Hold. One… two. Exhale slowly.

Let it all go. Six… five… four… three… two… one. Feel the release. Again. Inhale. Your stomach expands like a balloon. One… two… three… four. Hold. One… two. Exhale. The balloon deflates. Six… five… four… three… two… one. Continue on your own now. Keep that rhythm. A deep inhale into the belly. A brief, soft pause. And a long, complete exhale. The hand on your chest is quiet.

The hand on your belly is your anchor. Rising… and falling. There is nothing else to do. Nowhere else to be. Just this breath. Now, let go of the counting. Let your hands rest by your sides. Allow your breath to return to its own natural rhythm. But notice if anything has changed. Maybe it’s a little deeper. A little slower. The calm was not created.

It was uncovered. Stay here for as long as you need. When you’re ready to move, do it slowly. This quiet is always available. You just have to breathe your way back to it.
