Your vagus nerve is the longest nerve in your body, connecting your brain directly to your gut. Activating it is the fastest way to manually downshift your entire nervous system. In our last session, we established the power of a daily reset. Today, we find the master key to that reset, using a technique that speaks directly to that nerve. Let’s begin. Find a comfortable position. You can be sitting up, with your spine long.

Or lying down, feeling the support of the floor or your bed beneath you. It doesn’t matter where you are, only that you can be still for a few minutes. Close your eyes when you’re ready. Bring your awareness to your breath. Don’t change it yet. Just notice it. Where do you feel it most? In your nose? The back of your throat? Your chest? Just observe. Now, take one hand and place it on the center of your chest.

Take your other hand and place it on your belly, right over your navel. These are your feedback sensors. Your anchors for the next few minutes. We’re going to practice diaphragmatic breathing. Belly breathing. The goal is simple. The hand on your belly is the one that moves. The hand on your chest should stay relatively still. This is how you know it's working. Let’s try. Breathe in slowly through your nose.

And as you do, send the breath down, deep into your belly. Feel your abdomen expand, like a balloon filling with air. Feel it press gently into your lower hand. Now, a slow exhale through your mouth. Feel your belly fall, gently contracting back toward your spine. Your top hand barely moved. That’s it. That’s the entire practice. Let’s do it again. Inhale through the nose… two… three… four… feel the belly rise.

And exhale through the mouth… two… three… four… five… six… feel the belly fall. The exhale is longer than the inhale. This is intentional. This is what tells your body it’s safe. Keep going. At your own pace. Inhale… belly expands. Exhale… belly softens. If your mind wanders, bring it back to the feeling of your hand rising and falling. That’s your job right now. Nothing else. Notice if you’re holding tension anywhere.

Your jaw… let it go slack. Your shoulders… allow them to drop away from your ears. Your chest is soft. All the work is happening in your belly. This is the way you breathed when you were a baby. Your body remembers. You’re not learning something new. You’re remembering something fundamental. Inhale… filling up. Exhale… letting go. This isn’t about perfection. It’s about practice. Some breaths will be deeper than others.

Some thoughts will be stickier than others. It’s okay. Just return to the feeling of your hand. The gentle rise. The gentle fall. This is real. This is physiology. You are actively calming your nervous system with your own intention. With your own breath. Let’s take one more together. The deepest one yet. Inhale through the nose, fill the belly completely. Feel the expansion. Hold it for just a moment at the top.

And then a long, slow, complete exhale. Empty it all out. Let your breath return to its natural rhythm. You can release your hands, resting them wherever is comfortable. Just sit for a moment in the stillness you’ve created. Notice the shift. When you’re ready, you can gently open your eyes. This tool is always with you. Use it.
