The average human mind has sixty thousand thoughts a day. In our last time together, we began to quiet them with a sunset surrender. Tonight, we’ll let a quiet river carry them away. So find a comfortable place to rest. Lying down, if that feels right for you.
Close your eyes. And just… arrive. Begin by noticing your breath. No need to change it. Simply feel the gentle rise of your chest or belly as you breathe in. And the soft release as you breathe out. Allowing the day to soften at the edges.
Noticing any tension in your jaw… and letting it go. In your shoulders… and letting them fall. In your hands… and letting them rest, open. Now, in your mind’s eye… I want you to imagine a river. It is dusk. The sky is a deep, soft indigo.
A sliver of moon hangs in the air. You are standing at the water’s edge. You can feel the cool, damp earth beneath your feet. You can smell the sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine on the breeze. And you can hear the gentle, steady murmur of the water.
A sound that has no beginning… and no end. This river is safe. This river is here for you. Slowly, you walk into the water. It is cool, but not cold. It feels like silk against your skin. You lie back, and the river holds you completely.
You are weightless. You are supported. You are floating. And now… you begin to drift. The gentle current carries you downstream, away from the shore. Away from the day that is done. As you float, let the thoughts and worries of the day come to mind.
One by one. A conversation you had. A task left undone. A feeling you’ve been carrying. Don’t push them away. Just notice them. And as each one arises… simply place it on a leaf… and let it float away beside you on the water. Watch it drift away… carried by the current… until it is just a tiny speck in the distance… and then it is gone.
Another worry surfaces. Place it on the water. And let the river carry it. You do not need to hold it anymore. The river will hold it for you. Just floating now. Drifting in the soft, deep quiet of the evening. The stars begin to appear above you, one by one.
The only sound is the gentle lapping of the water. There is nothing to do. Nowhere to be. Just this moment. This breath. This stillness. The river has carried you to a calm, quiet pool. The water is almost perfectly still here. Reflecting the stars.
Here, you can rest. Feel the stillness of the water become your own stillness. The peace of the river is your own peace. Rest here. In the quiet. In the dark. Held and safe. You have arrived.
