The average person has about sixty-thousand thoughts per day. Last time, in our Sunset Surrender, we began to unwind the body. Tonight, we create a gentle space for the mind. So let’s begin. Find a position that feels comfortable for you.
Lying down, perhaps. Or seated, with your back supported. There is nothing to do right now. Nowhere to be. Simply arrive. Allow your eyes to close, if they haven't already. And bring your awareness to your breath.
Noticing the gentle rise on the inhale. And the soft fall on the exhale. No need to change a thing. Just observing. With each exhale, feel a little more weight release into the surface beneath you. Allowing the jaw to soften.
The small muscles around your eyes to release. Feeling the shoulders fall away from the ears. Heavy and at ease. Your arms are resting. Your hands are soft. Breathing in. And breathing out. Letting go of the day.
Now, bring to your mind’s eye the image of a vast, open sky. A boundless blue, stretching in all directions. This sky is your awareness. Calm. Open. Always present. As you rest here, you may notice thoughts appearing.
These are the clouds. Some thoughts might be small and wispy, drifting by almost unnoticed. Others might be large, dark, and heavy… seeming to fill the whole sky for a moment. Your task is not to stop the clouds.
It is not to change them. Or to judge them. It is simply to watch them drift. See a thought arrive… like a cloud forming on the horizon. Acknowledge it without getting caught up in its story. And then… watch as it floats on by, eventually dissolving back into the vastness.
If you prefer, you can imagine yourself beside a slow, gentle stream. Each thought is a leaf that lands on the water's surface. You just watch it float away. Down the stream. Out of sight. Another thought arrives.
Another leaf. You watch it go. There is no need to rush. There is no need to hold on. Notice the space between the thoughts. That quiet stillness. That is your peace. That is YOU. The sky remains, even when the clouds pass.
The stream flows on, long after the leaf is gone. Rest here now. In this quiet, open space. Breathing. Being. The day is done. Peace is the space between the thoughts.
