A muscle can't stay clenched forever. After about seven seconds of maximum contraction, it is physically forced to let go. Last night in our Sunset Surrender, we gathered the day's quiet gifts. Tonight, we’ll help the body truly receive them, by teaching it how to release what it no longer needs to hold.
So let’s begin. Find your way into a comfortable position. Allowing your body to be held by the bed… the pillows… the soft darkness of the room. There is nothing you need to do. Nowhere you need to be. Simply arrive… right here. Let’s take a slow breath in through the nose. And a long, soft sigh out through the mouth.
Letting the day melt away with the sound. One more time… a slow breath filling you up. And a gentle breath out… letting go. Now… bring your awareness all the way down to your feet. To your toes. On your next breath in… gently curl your toes, tensing the arches of your feet. Just enough to feel the tension.
Hold it for a moment. And now… as you breathe out… let them go completely. Feel the wave of softness… of warmth… as they release. Noticing the difference… between holding on… and letting go. Now, allow that awareness to travel up into your calves and your thighs. On your next inhale, gently tense the large muscles of your legs.
Pointing your toes slightly… feeling the engagement in your legs. Holding that tension… just for a moment. And on the exhale… release. Let your legs become heavy… limp… and deeply relaxed. Sinking into the mattress. Bring your awareness now to your hands. Gently make two soft fists.
Tensing your hands… your wrists… and your forearms. Feel that energy of holding. And now… release. Let the fingers uncurl. Feel the warmth rush back into your palms. Your arms heavy and still at your sides. And now for the shoulders. This is where we hold so much of the day. On an inhale, gently lift your shoulders up toward your ears.
Squeezing them tight. Holding the weight of the world… just for a second. And on a long exhale… let them DROP. Feel them melt down and away from your ears. Creating space in your neck… and across your upper back. Finally… your face. Gently clench your jaw… squint your eyes… furrow your brow.
Holding all that expression. And now… release it all. Let the jaw go slack. Allow the tiny muscles around your eyes to soften. Smooth out your forehead. A feeling of deep peace washing over your entire face. And now… just rest. Your whole body is quiet. Heavy… warm… and still. There is nothing left to do.
Nothing to hold. Simply rest.
