A study in the Journal of Sleep Research found that a nightly body scan can cut the time it takes to fall asleep by almost fifty percent. In our last time together, we practiced letting go of the day’s thoughts. Tonight, we invite that same gentle release into the body itself. So find your way into a comfortable position. Lying down, if that feels right for you.

Allowing your arms and legs to rest wherever they naturally fall. Begin by bringing your awareness to your breath. Not changing it in any way. Just noticing the gentle rise and fall of your chest or your belly. The air entering. And the air leaving. Each breath, an anchor to this present moment. Now, bring a gentle, curious awareness all the way down to your feet.

Notice the soles of your feet. The heels resting against the surface beneath you. The arches. The balls of the feet. And each of the ten toes. Simply feeling whatever is there to be felt. Warmth. Coolness. Tingling. Without needing to change a thing, simply allow a sense of softness to enter your feet. This gentle awareness now travels up into your ankles.

And into your lower legs. Your shins and your calf muscles. The muscles that carried you through the day. There is no need to hold on any longer. You can invite them to soften. To release. To grow heavy. Your awareness now pools around your knees. The front, the back, and deep inside the joint. And from there, it flows up into your thighs. The large, strong muscles of your upper legs.

Feel their weight. Their solidness. And give them permission to let go completely. Now, bring your attention to your hips, your pelvis, and your lower back. An area that holds so much tension from our day. Just notice. And with your next exhale, imagine any tightness simply melting away. Creating space. Creating ease. Your awareness drifts upward now, into your belly.

Allowing it to be soft. Letting the breath move freely here. And then into your chest. Feeling the gentle, steady rhythm of your heart. A quiet, constant presence. Let your awareness travel down your arms now. All the way to your fingertips. Noticing the sensations in each finger. In the palms of your hands. Your wrists. This awareness flows up through your forearms, past your elbows, and into your upper arms.

Letting your arms feel heavy and deeply settled. Notice your shoulders. See if you can allow them to drop away from your ears, releasing any burdens they might be carrying. Letting go. Finally, bring your attention to your neck and your throat. Inviting softness here. Then to your jaw. Let it be slack. Let your tongue rest gently in your mouth. Soften the tiny muscles around your eyes.

And let your forehead become smooth and wide. Your awareness rests at the very crown of your head. For a few moments, just rest here. Aware of your whole body. Breathing. Held. Still. There is nothing else for you to do. And nowhere else for you to be. Simply rest.
