The average person has over six thousand thoughts each day. In our last gentle nightfall meditation, we began the work of unwinding and letting go of the day. Tonight, we’ll give those thoughts a place to go, allowing them to drift on by. Find your way into a comfortable position. Lying down, perhaps. Allowing your body to feel heavy and supported by the surface beneath you.

Let your eyes drift closed, if they haven't already. There is nothing you need to do. Nothing to fix or figure out. Simply be here, in this moment. Bring your awareness to your breath. Notice the gentle rise and fall of your chest, or your belly. Feeling the air as it enters through your nose… cool and fresh. And feeling it leave… warm and soft. You don't need to change your breathing in any way.

Just allow it to be. A quiet, steady rhythm. An anchor in the present. As you settle here, thoughts from the day may begin to surface. Plans for tomorrow. Conversations you had. Things left undone. That's okay. Let them come. Now, begin to imagine a small, gentle stream. It’s flowing peacefully through a quiet forest. You can hear the soft sound of the water as it moves over smooth stones.

See the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves overhead. This stream is calm and steady. It flows without effort. As a thought or a worry appears in your mind, I want you to gently notice it. Acknowledge its presence without getting caught up in its story. See it for what it is… just a thought. Now, imagine placing that thought onto a leaf. A single, perfect leaf, floating on the surface of the water.

Maybe it’s a worry about work. Place it on the leaf. Maybe it’s a memory from the day. Place it on the leaf. And now… watch as the current gently takes the leaf. It begins to drift. Slowly at first. Then it joins the flow of the stream, moving away from you. Follow it with your gaze until it floats around a bend… and disappears from sight. And you are left here, by the quiet stream.

Waiting for the next thought. When it arrives… do the same. Notice it. Place it on a new leaf. And let it go. Some thoughts might feel heavier. More persistent. That’s alright. Place them on the leaf just the same. Trust the stream to carry them. There is no need to push them away. Just release them into the water’s gentle care. One by one. Leaf by leaf. Drifting away.

If your mind wanders away from the stream, that’s perfectly normal. Gently guide your attention back. Back to the sound of the water. Back to the feeling of release. Each thought is just a visitor, passing through. You can simply watch it go. Now, allow the image of the stream to slowly fade. Let it dissolve into a feeling of quiet and stillness. Bring your awareness back to your body.

Back to the simple sensation of your breath. Inhale. And exhale. The thoughts have been carried away. What remains is peace. A quiet space for rest. There is nothing left to do now. Nowhere else to be. Simply rest.
