Your next breath is already on its way. In our last time together for Gentle Nightfall, we simply invited the feeling of letting go. Tonight, we will give that feeling a form, a shape you can release. Begin by finding a position that feels like true rest. Lying down in your bed, feeling the weight of the blankets. Or seated comfortably, with your back supported.

Allow your hands to rest in your lap, palms facing up or down. And when you are ready, let your eyes gently close. Feel the solid surface beneath you. The mattress, the chair. Let it hold your full weight. Give your body permission to be heavy. To be completely supported. You do not need to hold yourself up any longer. Bring your awareness to your breath, just as it is.

There is no need to change it. Notice the gentle rise of your chest or belly as you inhale. And the soft, effortless release as you exhale. Each breath is a quiet arrival. Each breath is a gentle departure. A rhythm that has been with you all day, now here to guide you into stillness. Now, allow the day that has passed to drift into your awareness. Not to be relived or analyzed, but simply to be seen.

Thoughts, worries, conversations, tasks still undone. Let each one take on a physical form. Perhaps a difficult conversation is a small, tangled knot of string. An unfinished task from work is a single, crumpled piece of paper. A lingering worry about tomorrow is a smooth, cool stone held in your palm. Maybe a moment of frustration is a dry, brittle leaf.

There is no need to examine them closely. Simply acknowledge their presence. Feel their texture and their weight for just a moment. Now, in your mind’s eye, imagine yourself standing beside a slow, gentle stream. The water is perfectly clear, moving without hurry over a bed of soft moss and smooth stones. You can hear its soft, murmuring sound. The air is cool and still, smelling of damp earth and evening quiet.

One by one, you will release these objects into the water. First, take the tangled knot of string. Feel its rough texture one last time, and then set it on the surface of the water. Watch as the current catches it. It carries it gently away, and you see the knot slowly begin to unwind as it drifts downstream, until it disappears from view. Next, the crumpled piece of paper.

Place it in the stream. It floats for a moment, and then the water begins to smooth it out, washing away the creases as it carries it along on its journey. You watch until you can no longer see it. With it goes the pressure of the unfinished. Now, the dry, brittle leaf. Let it fall from your fingers onto the water. It lands so lightly, and is immediately swept away by the gentle current, dancing and turning as it goes.

And finally, the smooth, cool stone. Open your hand and let it drop into the water. It makes almost no sound as it enters. It settles on the bottom, and the gentle current washes over it, clean and clear. It is at peace there. Your hands are now empty. Notice the feeling that remains. A sense of lightness in your palms. A quiet space where those objects used to be.

This lightness can now spread. Feel it moving from your hands into your arms. Softening your shoulders, allowing them to release down, away from your ears. Feel this ease travel up into your neck and your jaw, letting go of any tension held there. The space between your eyebrows grows smooth and wide. Your entire face can soften. Your body feels lighter.

Your mind feels quieter. The stream has carried it all away. There is nothing left to hold onto. Nothing left to solve tonight. All that is required now is this gentle state of being. Your only task now is to rest. To allow this quiet to deepen. To welcome the peace that is already here, filling the space that was cleared. All that is left is this quiet. This peace.

Rest now.
