Researchers at Queen's University found the average mind produces over six thousand thoughts in a single day. In our last time together for Gentle Nightfall, we sought a place of deep rest. Tonight, we prepare the way for that peace by gently setting down the weight of those thoughts. So let’s begin. Find a position that feels like rest for you.

Lying down, or seated comfortably. Allow your eyes to close whenever you feel ready. Bring your awareness to the room around you. Notice the temperature of the air on your skin. Hear the quiet sounds, near and far. You are here, in this space, at the end of this day. Now, bring your awareness to your body. Feel the points of contact... where your body meets the chair, or the bed.

Feel the gentle pull of gravity. There is nothing you need to do. Nothing to hold up. Let yourself be supported. And now, notice your breath. Just notice it, without any need to change it. The gentle rise on the inhale. The soft release on the exhale. Each breath is a wave, washing in... and washing out. Inhaling calm. Exhaling the day. As you settle here, I want you to imagine a small, clear stream.

It flows gently through a quiet forest. The water is clean and slow-moving. You are sitting comfortably on its bank. The air is soft and still. The day you just lived is now behind you. It was filled with moments, conversations, feelings... those six thousand thoughts. One by one, we are going to let them go. As a thought from the day enters your mind...

perhaps a task left undone... or a word someone said... see it clearly. Acknowledge it without judgment. Now, imagine placing that thought onto a single leaf. And gently placing that leaf onto the surface of the stream. Watch as the current catches it. Slowly... gently... it drifts away. Downstream, and out of sight. It is not gone forever. It is simply gone for now.

Another thought arrives. A feeling in your body... a tightness in your shoulders... a worry about tomorrow. See it. Place it on another leaf. And let it go onto the water. Watch it float away. There is no rush. The stream is patient. It can hold everything. One leaf at a time. One thought at a time. Letting each one go. Watching it drift. Creating space.

Continue this for a few moments in silence. Placing and releasing. Watching the stream carry the day away. The stream of thoughts begins to slow. The leaves become fewer... further apart. Perhaps the water is now clear. Just the gentle sound of the current. Rest here in this quiet. In this stillness. This is the space between the thoughts. The peace that is always available, just beneath the noise.

Slowly, gently, let the image of the stream dissolve. Bring your awareness back to your breath. The simple, steady rhythm of your body at rest. Feel the weight of your body again. Notice the quiet in your mind. When you are ready, you can begin to wiggle your fingers and toes. Bringing gentle movement back into the body. There is no hurry. The day is now complete.

You have set down what was heavy. You have cleared the way for rest. The work of the day is done.
