Here, at the end of your day, you have arrived. In our last time together, we spoke of inviting deep rest. Tonight, we will gently let go of all that is needed to find it. So begin by finding a position that feels truly comfortable for you. Perhaps lying down in your bed, feeling the full support of the mattress beneath you. There is nothing else you need to do right now.
Nothing to fix, and nowhere else to be. This time is just for you. Simply allow your body to settle. Let your hands rest wherever they fall. Let your shoulders soften away from your ears. Notice the weight of your body making an impression on the surface below. And when you feel ready, allow your eyes to gently drift closed. Now, bring your awareness to your breath.
Just noticing its natural, easy rhythm. Without any need to change it at all. Feel the gentle rise of your chest or perhaps your belly on the inhale. And the soft, complete release on the exhale. There is no right or wrong way to breathe. Your body knows exactly what to do. It has been breathing for you all day, without you having to think about it once. All you have to do now is notice.
Just this breath, in. And this breath, out. Feeling the simple, physical sensation of air as it enters your body… cool and fresh. And the feeling of surrender as it leaves… warm and soft. As you continue to breathe in this easy way, you might begin to imagine your exhale doing a gentle job. Imagine each exhale is carrying something away with it. Perhaps it carries a lingering thought from a conversation you had.
Or a small worry about something on your list for tomorrow. With each breath out, you can gently, softly, release it. Visualize these thoughts or feelings as small, puffy clouds in a vast blue sky. As you breathe out, you watch one of those clouds begin to drift. It floats slowly, peacefully, across the sky of your mind. And then it's gone. Another breath out… another cloud drifts by, and disappears over the horizon.
There is no effort here. No pushing. You are simply the sky, allowing the clouds to pass. Some days the sky is full of clouds. Other days, there are only a few. It does not matter. The sky does not mind. You are the stillness that holds it all. You just watch them go. And as the clouds drift away, you begin to notice what remains. The space between them. A sense of quiet.
A sense of deep, abiding stillness. With each exhale, this feeling of spaciousness can grow. The sky of your mind becoming clearer. More open. More peaceful. This stillness is not something you have to create. It is always here, just underneath the noise and activity of the day. You are simply returning home to it now. Feel this quiet expand from your mind, traveling gently down into your body.
A sense of softness in your jaw and your forehead. A comfortable heaviness in your arms and your legs. Your whole body, resting. Held. Secure. Sinking softly and deeply into the surface beneath you. You don't need to hold on to anything now. The thoughts may still come and go, and that is perfectly okay. When they do, you can simply notice them, and then return your attention to your breath.
Your gentle anchor in this quiet, present moment. The day is complete. It is done. You have done enough. There is nothing left to do. And now, there is only rest. The deep, restorative rest your body and mind have been waiting for. May your sleep be peaceful and deep.
