Taking just six deep breaths a minute can activate your body's vagus nerve, signaling it's time to rest. In our last session together, we spoke about releasing the day to find peaceful rest. Tonight, we’ll use the simple, powerful anchor of the breath to do just that. So let's begin. Find a position that feels comfortable for you. Lying down, or seated.
Whatever allows your body to feel supported. Allow your eyes to gently close. Or soften your gaze toward the floor. Bring your awareness, gently, to your breath. You don't need to change anything at all. Simply notice that you are breathing. Feeling the air as it enters your body. And feeling it as it leaves. Perhaps you feel the breath at the tip of your nose.
A slight coolness on the inhale. A slight warmth on the exhale. Or maybe you feel the breath more in your body. The gentle rise and fall of your chest. Or the expansion and release of your belly. There is no right or wrong way to feel it. Just notice where your breath is for you, right now. Now, let's invite the body to soften. With each exhale, imagine a wave of release washing over you.
Each out-breath is an invitation to let go. Letting go of one small thing. A thought. A worry. A plan. It can wait. Bring your awareness to your shoulders. Notice if they are holding any tension from the day. On your next exhale, invite them to drop away from your ears. Feeling a little more space. A little more ease. Now, bring your awareness to your jaw.
A place where we often hold so much effort. See if you can allow the teeth to part slightly. Letting the tongue rest gently in the mouth. With your next exhale, release any tightness here. And now, for the next few moments, there is nothing to do. Nowhere to go. Simply resting here, with the rhythm of your own breath. Inhaling. And exhaling. Thoughts may come.
That's perfectly normal. See if you can let them drift by, like clouds in the sky. Without holding on to them. Without pushing them away. Your anchor is always here. This breath. And the next one. Just this. Resting in the quiet space between the thoughts. The space between the breaths. This stillness is always available to you. Now, let’s begin to gently return.
Keeping your eyes closed, bring your awareness back to the feeling of your body. Notice the points of contact. The weight of your body supported by the surface beneath you. Slowly, begin to bring some small movement back. Perhaps wiggling your fingers. And your toes. Taking your time. There is no rush. When you feel ready, you can take one last, deep breath in.
And as you breathe out, gently open your eyes. Bringing your awareness back into the room. The day is complete. The night is yours.
