A single, deep exhale can lower your heart rate by up to fifteen beats per minute. Last time, we used mindful breaths to help release the day’s weight. Tonight, we invite the body to join us, to show us the path from tension to ease. Find a position where you can feel fully supported.
Lying down, if that’s available to you. Let your arms rest gently by your sides. Let your feet fall open naturally. Begin by noticing your breath. Not changing it. Just noticing the gentle rise and fall of your chest or belly. With each exhale, imagine a little bit of the day’s effort leaving your body.
Now, bring your awareness all the way down to your feet. To your toes. On your next inhale, gently curl your toes, tensing the muscles in your feet. Hold that tension for just a moment. Feel it. And on your exhale, let it all go. Release completely. Notice the difference between the tension… and the release.
A warmth, a softness. Moving your awareness up into your lower legs. Your calves and shins. Inhale and gently point your toes, feeling the muscles in your calves tighten. Just enough to feel the engagement. Hold. And then exhale, letting the muscles go soft.
Feel the wave of relaxation flow through your lower legs. Now, bring your attention to your thighs. The large, strong muscles in the front and back of your upper legs. On an inhale, gently squeeze these muscles. As if you are bracing them. Hold the feeling of strength there.
And with your exhale, release them fully. Let your legs feel heavy and warm. Sinking softly into the surface beneath you. Let’s move to your hands. Gently curl your fingers into a soft fist. Inhale and squeeze, feeling the tension in your hands and forearms.
Hold it. Now, exhale and let your fingers unfurl. Feel the energy dissolving from your palms, out through your fingertips. Your hands are now soft. Open. At rest. Bring that awareness up into your shoulders. We so often hold the weight of the day right here.
On your next inhale, draw your shoulders up toward your ears. Feel that familiar tightness. Hold them there for a breath. And on a long, slow exhale, let them drop. Feel them melt away from your ears. Notice the space you’ve created in your neck. Finally, your face.
We hold so much tension here without even realizing it. Gently clench your jaw. Feel the muscles tighten. And release. Let your jaw go slack, perhaps your lips part slightly. Now, squint your eyes shut. Tightly. Hold. And release. Let the tiny muscles around your eyes soften completely.
Now, just be still. Do nothing at all. Scan your body one last time, from the tips of your toes to the crown of your head. Notice the feeling of deep, quiet ease. A pleasant heaviness. This is the feeling of rest. You did not force it. You simply allowed the tension to leave.
The stillness you have created is always here for you. It is your natural state. Rest is not something you earn. It is something you return to.
