The average human takes about twenty-three thousand breaths a day. In our last time together, we practiced letting go piece by piece. Tonight, we’ll invite just a few of those breaths to help us unwind and find our way home to rest. Begin by finding a position that feels like ease. Lying down, perhaps, in your bed.

Allowing your body to be held completely by the surface beneath it. There is nothing else you need to do right now. Nowhere else you need to be. Close your eyes when you feel ready. And simply begin to notice your breath. There is no need to change it. Just feeling the air as it enters your body. And feeling it as it leaves.

Each exhale offers an invitation to soften. A chance to let go. Bring your awareness now, gently, all the way down to your feet. To the very tips of your toes. Can you feel them? Noticing any sensation there at all. Warmth. Coolness. Tingling. Whatever you find is okay. Let a feeling of softness spread into the soles of your feet.

Releasing the arches. Allowing your heels to feel heavy, sinking into the mattress. Your feet have carried you through the day. They can rest now. This gentle awareness can travel up into your ankles. Your calves. And your shins. Feeling the weight of your legs. Letting the muscles soften around the bone. Awareness flows up into your knees.

And into your thighs. Letting go of any holding. Any tension from walking, or standing, or sitting. Just letting them be heavy and supported. Now, bring your awareness to your hips and your pelvis. A sense of grounding. Of release. Feel your lower back spreading, meeting the surface you're on. Let your belly be soft.

Rising gently with the inhale. And falling gently with the exhale. This quiet rhythm has been with you all day. Awareness now moves up into your chest and your upper back. Feeling the gentle expansion of your ribs with each breath. Letting your shoulders release. Allowing them to fall away from your ears. Heavy. Soft.

Let this feeling of release pour down through your arms. Past your elbows. Into your forearms. All the way to your hands. Noticing your palms. The backs of your hands. Each finger, one by one. Letting them rest. Open and soft. No longer needing to hold or to grasp. Gently, bring your awareness to your neck. The place that connects your thinking mind and your feeling body.

Invite it to soften. Let your head feel heavy and fully supported by the pillow. Release your jaw. Let your tongue rest gently in your mouth. Your lips can part slightly if they wish. Soften the small muscles around your eyes. Let your forehead become smooth. Wide. Calm. Awareness at the very crown of your head. And now.

For just a moment, feel your whole body at once. From the tips of your toes to the top of your head. Breathing. A single field of sensation. Held. Supported. At rest. There is nothing to fix. Nothing to change. Just this quiet presence. You have arrived. As you continue to breathe… you can allow this awareness to dissolve.

Giving yourself permission to drift. The day is complete. Rest now.
