The average human mind produces around fifty thousand thoughts each day. In our last time together for Gentle Nightfall, we began the quiet work of letting the day settle into restful peace. Tonight, we continue that journey inward. Find a comfortable position. One that signals to your body that it is time for rest. Lying down, perhaps, with your hands resting gently at your sides or on your body.
Allow your eyes to close. Begin by finding your breath. Don't change it. Just notice it. Feel the air as it enters through your nose… cool and fresh. And feel it as it leaves… warm and soft. Notice the gentle rise of your chest or belly on the in-breath. And the gentle fall on the out-breath. Each breath is an anchor. A place to return to. Now, bring your awareness to the weight of your body.
Feel the points of contact… where you are supported by the surface beneath you. Let that surface hold you completely. Give your body permission to soften. Let your jaw unclench. Allow your shoulders to release and drop away from your ears. Let go of the need to hold anything up. As you rest here, thoughts will naturally continue to arise. That is what minds do. There is no need to stop them, or to fight with them.
Tonight, we will simply observe. Imagine you are lying in a field of soft grass on a clear day. Above you is a vast, open, blue sky. This sky is your own awareness. Calm, spacious, and always present. From time to time, a cloud will drift into view. Each cloud is a thought. A memory from the day. A plan for tomorrow. A worry. A question. When a thought-cloud appears, your practice is simple.
Just notice it. Acknowledge it without judgment. You might even label it gently in your mind… "Ah, thinking." You do not need to follow the cloud. You don't need to study its shape or wonder where it came from. You are the sky, not the cloud. You simply watch as it drifts, at its own pace, across your awareness… and eventually, out of sight. And in the space it leaves behind… you return to the feeling of the vast, blue sky.
You return to your breath. Another cloud may appear. Perhaps a thought about this meditation. See it. Acknowledge it. And let it float by. Return to your breath. Inhaling… and exhaling. If you find you have floated away with a cloud… that is perfectly normal. The moment you realize it, you are already back. Gently, kindly, release the cloud and guide your attention back to the sky.
Back to your breath. Rest here for a few moments in the stillness. Watching the weather of your mind from the quiet calm of the sky. Slowly, gently, begin to bring your awareness back to your body in this room. Feel the gentle touch of the air on your skin. Notice the quiet sounds around you. When you feel ready, you can wiggle your fingers and your toes. There is no rush. Carry this feeling of spaciousness with you as you drift into sleep.
Your awareness is the sky. The thoughts are just the weather passing through.
