Your scalp holds about one hundred thousand individual hair follicles. In our last gentle nightfall together, we focused on releasing the day. Tonight, we’ll go a little deeper, exploring the quiet landscape of the body itself. Find a comfortable position, lying down if you can. Let your arms and legs settle wherever they feel most at ease.
Close your eyes when you feel ready. Begin by noticing your breath. Not changing it, just noticing. The air entering your body... and the air leaving your body. Each breath is an arrival, and each breath is a letting go. With each exhale, feel the surface beneath you holding you completely. The bed, the floor… it is here to support you.
You don’t need to hold yourself up any longer. Bring your awareness all the way down, down to your feet. Notice your toes. Maybe give them a tiny wiggle, and then allow them to be still. Feel the space between each toe. Let this gentle awareness travel into the soles of your feet. The arches. The heels, resting heavy against the surface.
Your feet have carried you through the day. Their work is now done. Allow them to be soft. This quiet attention now flows up into your ankles… your shins… and your calves. Feeling their weight. Feeling any lingering tightness from the day just… melting away. There is nowhere to go. Nothing to do. Awareness drifts into your knees… the space behind your knees.
And now your thighs. Let them feel heavy, warm, and completely relaxed. Releasing all effort. Notice your hips, and the way they settle into the mattress. Feel the release in your lower back. With each breath out, let go a little more. Let the quiet grow. Bring your awareness now to your stomach. The gentle, natural rise and fall with each breath.
No need to control it. Just feel it. A soft, steady rhythm. Let this awareness expand into your chest. Feeling your ribs move gently with the breath. At the center of your chest is your heart space. You don’t need to do anything at all… just rest your attention here. A place of quiet. A place of peace. Feel your shoulders. Notice if they are holding any tension… and invite them to drop down, away from your ears.
Let them melt. This feeling of softness flows down your arms… through your elbows… all the way to your wrists. Your hands can rest now. Notice your palms… your fingers. Perhaps they are gently curled. Let them be however they are. Completely at ease. The awareness moves to your neck. A place that holds so much. Invite it to soften.
Let your head feel heavy and fully supported by the pillow. Soften your jaw. Let your teeth part slightly. Relax your tongue. Let your cheeks feel smooth and calm. The tiny muscles around your eyes… let them go. Let your forehead become wide and clear. And finally, bring your awareness to the very top of your head. The scalp.
That whole landscape, now quiet and still. For a moment, feel your whole body. From the tips of your toes to the crown of your head. All of you, breathing here in this quiet space. Held. Safe. There is nothing left to do. Rest now.
