Find a place where you can rest. Perhaps sitting up with a straight but not stiff spine... or lying down completely. Let your body feel fully supported. Let your hands rest gently in your lap, or by your sides. The day is done. There is nothing left for you to do right now. Nothing to solve. Nothing to plan for. Nothing to figure out. This time is for you. A quiet gift to yourself. Begin by noticing your breath.
Just as it is. There is no need to change its rhythm... or its depth. Simply become an observer of your own breathing. The gentle rise of your chest or belly as you breathe in. The soft fall as you breathe out. Perhaps you can feel the air entering through your nose... cool and fresh. And notice it leave... slightly warmer... carrying with it what is no longer needed. Each breath is an anchor...
pulling you gently out of the stream of thoughts... and into this present moment. Here. Now. Now, bring that gentle awareness into your body. Feel the full weight of your body. Notice the points of contact... where you connect with the chair or the bed beneath you. Feel how you are held... supported... safe. Let your attention travel down, all the way down to the tips of your toes. Invite any tension held in your feet to release.
Allow your feet to feel heavy... warm... and soft. Let this feeling of softness travel up from your feet... into your ankles... your calves... your shins. Let your legs grow heavy and still. Bring your awareness to your hips... your pelvis... and your lower back. This is an area where we often hold tension from sitting or standing. Let it sink into the surface beneath you. Releasing any holding.
Allow your belly to be soft. Let your chest be open. And now, your shoulders. We carry so much weight on our shoulders. The day's responsibilities. With your next exhale... imagine that weight melting away completely. Flowing down your arms... through your elbows and wrists... and pouring out through your fingertips. Let your neck be long and free. Your jaw... unclenched. Let there be a small space between your teeth.
Soften the tiny muscles around your eyes. And smooth out the space between your eyebrows. Let your whole body feel this deep sense of ease. As you rest here in this stillness... gently allow the day to come to mind. Not to relive it. Not to analyze it or judge it. Simply to acknowledge that it happened. Picture the events... the conversations... the tasks... the feelings. See them as individual clouds passing through a vast, endless sky.
You are not the clouds. The clouds are not you. You are the sky... vast and open and clear. With each breath out... you can choose one of those clouds... one thought... one worry... one piece of the day that feels heavy... and just watch it dissolve. See it drift... grow thin... and fade into the vastness. It has had its time. You can let it go now. Inhaling quiet and space. Exhaling the day's noise.
There is only this breath. This body. This moment of profound peace. Slowly... very gently... begin to bring your awareness back. Back to the feeling of the air on your skin. Back to the quiet, ambient sounds in the room. Maybe wiggle your fingers and your toes, a gentle awakening. You have created this space for yourself. A quiet harbor at the end of the day. You do not need to carry the day with you into your rest.
You can leave it right here. Carry this feeling of lightness and stillness with you... as you drift toward sleep. There is nothing more to do... but be. Rest well.
