Your body holds the story of your day in over six hundred muscles. In our last time together, we spoke of unwinding and letting go. Tonight, we will do just that… one piece at a time. Begin by finding a comfortable position. Lying down, if that feels right for you. Let your arms rest by your sides, palms facing up if you wish. And when you’re ready, allow your eyes to gently close.
Bring your awareness to your breath. Without needing to change it… simply notice it. Notice the gentle rise and fall of your chest or your belly. Feel the air as it enters your body… and feel it as it leaves. With each inhale, imagine you are breathing in calm. With each exhale, imagine you are releasing the day. Letting it all go.
Now, bring your attention to the very top of your head. Imagine a feeling of warmth and softness beginning there. Feel your scalp soften and release. Let this gentle wave of relaxation flow down over your forehead… smoothing out any lines of effort. Allow your eyebrows to drift apart. Feel the small, busy muscles around your eyes let go.
Notice the space behind your eyes… let it become heavy and quiet. Let your jaw unclench. Allow a little space to grow between your upper and lower teeth. Your tongue can rest gently in your mouth. This wave of softness now moves down into your neck and your shoulders. This is a place where we so often carry the weight of the day. On your next exhale, imagine that weight simply melting.
Dropping away from your ears. Dissolving down through your arms… your elbows… your wrists… and out through your fingertips. Your arms grow heavy and warm. Your hands are at rest. Nothing to hold. Nothing to do. Bring your awareness now to your torso. Your chest and your belly. Feeling the gentle, rhythmic movement of your breath here.
Feel the space around your heart open just a little. Allow your belly to be soft. Releasing any tightness or tension you might be holding here. Feel your entire back, from your shoulders to your hips, fully supported by the surface beneath you. Every point of contact is a point of release. Letting you sink just a little deeper. Let this feeling of release continue down into your hips… your pelvis… and into your legs.
The large muscles of your thighs letting go of their grip. All the standing, walking, and moving of the day is done. This gentle warmth flows down through your knees… your calves… your ankles… all the way to your feet. Feel the soles of your feet begin to tingle with release. As if all the miles you walked today are finally dissolving away.
And finally, your toes. Let each one soften. Each one letting go. Now, for a moment, feel your entire body at once. From the top of your head to the tips of your toes. A single field of peaceful sensation. Heavy. Calm. And still. There is nothing left to do. There is nowhere else to be. You are simply here, resting in this moment. Let any remaining thoughts pass by like clouds in a vast, quiet sky.
They are not yours to hold tonight. Your only work now is rest. Sleep well.
