Your nervous system has two distinct settings… one for action, and one for rest. In our last time together for Gentle Nightfall, we used the breath to release the day. Tonight, we’ll send that same invitation directly to the body, guiding it from doing… to simply being. Find your way into a comfortable position. Lying down, if that feels right.
Allow your eyes to gently close. There is nothing you need to do. Nothing to fix or figure out. Just arrive here, in this moment. Begin by noticing your breath. Not changing it. Just feeling the gentle rise and fall of your chest or belly. Each breath is an anchor to the present. Inhale. And exhale. Now, bring your awareness all the way down to your feet.
Let your attention rest there. On your next inhale, gently curl your toes, tensing the arches of your feet. Just enough to feel the muscles engage. Hold it for a moment. Notice the feeling of tension. And on your exhale, let it all go. Feel the muscles soften. Feel a wave of release wash over your feet. They may feel warmer… heavier. Now, allow that awareness to travel up into your lower legs.
Your calves. Gently point your toes away from you, feeling the calf muscles tighten. Hold that tension. And release. Let your feet fall naturally. Notice the difference between the tension… and this letting go. A feeling of melting. Bring your attention now to your thighs. The large muscles on the tops and backs of your legs. Gently press your legs down into the surface beneath you, just enough to feel them engage.
Hold for a breath. And with your exhale, release completely. Allow your legs to feel heavy, supported, and completely at rest. All the walking, standing, and carrying of the day is done. Now, move your awareness into your hands. Gently curl your fingers into soft fists. Not tight. Just a gentle squeeze. Feel the muscles in your hands and forearms activate.
And… release. Let your fingers uncurl. Feel the energy dissolving from your palms, out through your fingertips. Your hands have done enough for today. They can rest now. Bring your awareness to your shoulders. This is where we often carry the weight of the day. On an inhale, draw your shoulders up toward your ears. Feel that familiar tension. Hold it.
And on a long, slow exhale… let them drop. A complete release. Feel the space created between your ears and your shoulders. A sense of lightness. A sense of relief. Finally, bring your attention to your face. To the small muscles around your jaw, your eyes, and your forehead. Gently clench your jaw for just a moment. And release. Let your teeth part slightly.
Let your tongue rest in your mouth. Now, squeeze your eyes shut. Furrow your brow. And let it all go. Feel your forehead smooth out. Feel the tiny muscles around your eyes soften. Let your entire face become smooth… calm… and peaceful. Take a moment now to feel your entire body. Heavy. Soft. And still. From the tips of your toes to the crown of your head, a feeling of deep release.
You have guided your body into its natural state of rest. The work is done. There is nothing left to hold. There is only rest.
