A single, slow exhale can activate your body's vagus nerve, sending a direct signal to your system that it is safe to rest. In our last session, we focused on releasing tension from the muscles. Tonight, we begin with the breath that tells those muscles it is time to let go. Find a position that feels comfortable for you now. Perhaps lying down in your bed.
Or seated in a quiet space. There is nothing you need to do. Nothing to fix or to change. Simply arrive here. In this moment. If it feels right for you, allow your eyes to gently close. Or you can soften your gaze, letting it rest on a single point in the room. Begin by bringing your attention to your breath. Just noticing that you are breathing.
There’s no need to change your breath in any way. It knows exactly what to do. Your only task is to feel it. To be aware of its quiet, steady rhythm. In. And out. Where do you feel the breath most clearly? Perhaps it’s the sensation of cool air entering your nostrils. Or the gentle expansion and fall of your chest. Maybe you feel it in the soft rise of your abdomen.
Wherever you notice it, let your attention rest there. Gently. Without any effort. Notice the quality of your inhale. A gentle filling. A receiving. And notice the quality of your exhale. A softening. A release. Each breath is a complete cycle. A beginning, and an ending. Each exhale is an invitation to let go. To release the tensions of the day.
The thoughts. The conversations. The lingering feelings. You don’t need to name them. Simply allow the out-breath to carry them away. A gentle emptying. Creating space. Inhaling calm. Exhaling release. Let your awareness settle into this simple rhythm. The body breathing itself. There is a small space of stillness. At the very end of the exhale.
Just before the next breath begins. See if you can notice it. A tiny pause of complete quiet. This quiet is always available to you. It lives inside your own breath. As we come to a close, there is no need to rush. Stay with this feeling for as long as you wish. Letting the gentle rhythm guide you toward rest. This quiet is always here, waiting for your return.
