The average person takes about twenty-three thousand breaths in a single day. In our last session, we spoke about quieting the mind for the night. Tonight, we’ll use each of those breaths as a gentle tool to help that process along. So let’s begin. Find your way into a comfortable position.

Lying down, or seated. Whatever feels most restful for you right now. There is nothing you need to do. Nowhere else you need to be. Simply arrive here, in this moment. Begin by noticing the breath. Not changing it. Not forcing it. Just feeling the gentle rise on the inhale… and the natural fall on the exhale.

Each breath is an anchor. Bringing you right here. To this room. To this body. And now, we’ll begin to let go of the day. With each exhale, we’ll invite a part of the body to soften. To release. Bring your awareness to your jaw. Notice if there is any tightness held there. And on your next exhale… just allow the teeth to part slightly.

Let the jaw go slack. Now, bring your awareness to your shoulders. We often carry the weight of the day here. On your next exhale, feel them softening. Dropping away from your ears. Becoming heavy. Let your awareness travel down your arms, into your hands. Notice your fingers.

Are they curled tightly? On your next exhale… invite them to uncurl. To rest, open and soft. Now, notice the space around your eyes. The forehead. With your next exhale, feel that entire area smoothing out. Releasing any lingering expression. Bring your awareness to your belly.

Feel it rise gently as you breathe in… and soften completely as you breathe out. Letting go of any holding. Any tension. Finally, become aware of your whole body. Feel the weight of it. The way the surface beneath you is holding you. Supporting you completely. You don’t need to hold yourself up.

The bed… or the chair… is doing that for you. So with each exhale… just let go a little more. Sinking into that support. Feeling grounded. Calm. And still. The day is complete. All that is left now is rest.
