The average person has over sixty thousand thoughts each day. Last night, we invited stress to drift away like falling stars. Tonight, we turn to the source of so much of that feeling... the thoughts themselves. It’s as if the mind doesn't know the day has ended.
It continues to work, to plan, to remember, to worry. So let’s begin by simply… arriving. Wherever you are, allow your body to feel supported. Notice the points of contact. The back of your head resting. The weight of your shoulders softening into the surface beneath you.
The gentle heaviness in your arms and legs. There is nothing you need to do. There is nowhere else to be. Simply bring your attention to your breath. Noticing the inhale… and the exhale. Feeling the slight coolness as the air enters your body… and the gentle warmth as it leaves.
Each breath is an anchor. A quiet rhythm pulling you into this present moment. Just this breath. And now this one. As you rest here, you may notice that thoughts continue to arise. Memories from the day. Words someone said. A small worry about tomorrow. This is what the mind does.
It is not a mistake. It is not a failure. Our work is not to fight the thoughts, or to force them away. It is simply to notice them… and let them go. Imagine you are sitting peacefully on the bank of a slow-moving stream. The water is clear and calm. As a thought comes into your mind, gently place it on a leaf.
And watch as that leaf is carried away by the current. It appears… it floats past you… and it disappears from view. A thought about work… place it on a leaf. And watch it drift away. A fragment of a song… place it on a leaf. And let it go. You are the observer. You are the stillness on the riverbank.
You are not the leaves. You are not the stream. You are the one who watches. Or perhaps you see your thoughts as clouds in a vast, twilight sky. Each thought is a single cloud. Some are dark and heavy. Some are light and wispy. They drift into view… and without any effort from you… they drift out again.
You don't have to grab them. You don't have to follow them. Simply notice their shape, their color… and allow them to pass. The sky remains. Unchanged. Open and spacious. With each thought you allow to pass… you create a little more quiet. With each breath… a little more space.
The day is complete. Its work is done. There is nothing left for you to hold. Rest now, in the quiet space you have made.
