The average person has over six thousand thoughts each day. In our last meditation, Admin, we focused on letting go of the day itself. Tonight, we’ll turn our attention to the thoughts that came with it, creating a quiet space for rest. So let’s begin. Find your way into a comfortable position for sleep.
Allowing your body to be supported completely. Your head resting on the pillow. Your arms and legs settled wherever they feel most at ease. And let’s take a slow, deep breath together. Breathing in through the nose… filling the belly. And a long, slow sigh out through the mouth. Letting something go.
Another slow breath in. Feeling the chest gently rise. And as you breathe out, allowing the shoulders to soften… to drop away from the ears. One more breath, just like that. Inhaling calm. Exhaling the day. Now, just allow your breath to return to its own natural rhythm. No need to control it in any way.
Simply noticing its gentle rise and fall. Bring your awareness to your body, here in this bed. Noticing the weight of your head on the pillow. Feeling the support beneath you. Allow a wave of softness to move down from the crown of your head. Softening the muscles in your forehead… around your eyes.
Allowing your jaw to be loose and heavy. Let that softness travel down into your neck and your shoulders. Releasing any tension held there from the day. Just letting it melt away. Feeling that sense of ease travel down through your arms… all the way to your fingertips. Your hands are soft.
Your arms are heavy and relaxed. Noticing the gentle movement of your breath in your torso. A quiet rhythm. A simple anchor in this present moment. And now allowing that softness to flow down into your legs… your feet… your toes. Your whole body, from head to toe, is heavy… relaxed… and at peace.
And now, we turn our attention inward. To the mind. Imagine your mind is like a vast, open sky. And your thoughts are like clouds, just drifting through. Sometimes they are big and dark. Sometimes they are small and wispy. Your job right now is not to stop the clouds. It is not to change them.
It is simply to watch them pass. As a thought arises… just notice it. You might silently label it… "thinking." And then, without getting caught up in the story… just watch as it floats on by. Another thought may appear right behind it. That’s okay. Acknowledge it gently. "Ah, another thought." And let it go, too.
There is no need to judge the thoughts. No need to follow them. You are the sky. The thoughts are just the weather passing through. If you find yourself carried away by a thought… on a cloud… that’s perfectly normal. The moment you notice, you are already back. Gently, kindly, you can return your awareness to watching the sky.
Just resting here for a few moments. Watching the clouds of thought drift by. Noticing the quiet space between them. There is nothing you need to do. Nothing to figure out. Simply allowing everything to be as it is. And now… letting the clouds dissolve. Letting the thoughts fade into the background.
Bringing your awareness back to the simple, steady rhythm of your breath. Resting in this quiet. This stillness that was here all along. Giving yourself permission to drift. The sky is clear. Rest now.
