Around the World in Stories: Magical Journeys with a Seasoned Storyteller

In Japan, some believe foxes can live for a thousand years, growing more tails and more wisdom with every century. Last week we journeyed all around the globe in our stories, but today, we're landing in a quiet corner of Japan to meet one of these wise old creatures. I remember a boy named Kaito, who lived in a small village nestled between green hills and shimmering rice paddies. One afternoon, his mother packed him a small basket. Inside were three skewers of dango—sweet, chewy rice dumplings—a gift for his grandmother who lived on the other side of the forest.

"Go straight there," his mother said, "and don't be late." Kaito knew the path well. Or he thought he did. A great storm had passed through the night before. And the path he always walked was now blocked by a giant, fallen cedar tree, its roots torn from the damp earth. Kaito tried to climb over it, but the branches were a tangled mess. He tried to go around, but the woods were thick and unfamiliar. The sun began to dip below the hills, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple. A cool breeze whispered through the trees.

Kaito felt a shiver of fear. He was lost. He sat on a mossy rock, his heart beating a little faster. He thought about his warm bed. He thought about his grandmother, waiting for him. He pulled a skewer of dango from his basket. The sweet rice was supposed to be a treat, but now it just made him feel more alone. He was about to take a bite when he saw it. A flicker of movement in the shadows. A fox. Its fur was the color of autumn leaves, and its eyes… its eyes seemed to sparkle with an ancient light.

Kaito wasn't scared. He remembered his grandmother's words: "Be kind to every living thing, Kaito, and kindness will find its way back to you." Slowly, he broke off one of the dumplings and held it out on his palm. The fox crept closer. It sniffed his hand. Then, with a delicate motion, it took the dango. But it didn't run away. Instead, it looked at Kaito, tilted its head, and took a few steps down a barely-visible trail before turning to look back. It was an invitation. A silent question. "Are you coming?" Kaito hesitated for only a second.

He picked up his basket and followed. The fox trotted just ahead, its bushy tail a flash of red in the twilight. It led him over a babbling brook on a bridge of smooth stones and under the branches of weeping willows. As they passed a small, forgotten shrine with a stone torii gate, Kaito thought he saw not one, but two… maybe three tails swishing behind the fox. A Kitsune. A spirit fox. Just as quickly as the journey began, it was over. The fox stopped at the edge of the woods and nudged his leg with its nose.

Below him, Kaito saw the warm, glowing lights of his grandmother's house. He turned to thank his guide, but the fox was gone. In its place, on a patch of moss, lay a single, perfect red maple leaf. He learned something important that day, running down that hill. Sometimes the path you know disappears. But a little bit of kindness… can always show you a new way home.
