The first bowl of porridge was one hundred and ninety-seven degrees Fahrenheit. A thermal tripwire. Last week, we watched Cinderella’s stepsisters engineer their own daring escape; this week, the engineering is on a whole other LEVEL. The original storytellers would have you believe a little girl just wandered into a house and made a mess. Please. The truth is always more elegant. And far more expensive. Her name wasn’t Goldilocks. That was a codename, earned for her signature—flawless infiltration, zero damage, and a single, golden hair left behind as a calling card.
The target was a fortified chalet deep in an alpine forest, owned by the Bruin family—eccentric collectors with a legendary security system. And an even more legendary prize. The mission parameters were simple. Get in, acquire the asset, get out. The storybook called it trespassing. She called it a performance. Her evaluation of the porridge was swift. The first bowl—too hot—meant the floor’s thermal plates were active. The second—ice cold—meant the backup cryo-sensors were engaged. But the third bowl, kept at a perfect ninety-eight-point-six degrees… that was the key.
It told her the system was in its momentary calibration cycle. She had ninety seconds. She moved. The three chairs in the living room weren't for sitting. They were pressure sensors. A triad of interlocking scales guarding the vault door. The Papa Bear chair was calibrated for four hundred pounds of pressure. Too much. The Mama Bear chair, two hundred. Still too much. An incorrect weight would trigger a magnetic lockdown. But the little one… the Baby Bear chair… was set to exactly sixty-seven pounds. The weight of a small, solid gold statue.
Or, a small, solid gold toolkit. She placed her bag on the seat. A soft chime echoed. Not an alarm. A confirmation. The vault door slid open. Inside was not a bedroom. It was a gallery. And in the center, on three pedestals, were three beds. This was the final test. The Papa Bear bed was a slab of granite, its surface covered in microscopic vibration detectors. Too hard. The Mama Bear bed was a water-filled cushion, laced with chemical sniffers. Too soft. But the third bed… the little one… was just right. It was a decoy. A beautifully carved, empty frame.
Because the asset wasn't ON the bed. It was BENEATH it. She knelt, entered the final code, and a section of the floor hissed open. There it was. The First Honeycomb. A perfect hexagonal prism of crystallized, primordial amber, glowing with a soft internal light. The source of the Bruin family’s immense fortune. She lifted it from its velvet cradle, replacing it with a small, weighted substitute. Extraction was flawless. She was gone before the morning sun touched the peaks. When the Bruin family returned, they found nothing amiss.
The porridge was undisturbed. The chairs were perfectly aligned. The beds were made. Papa Bear didn't roar. He just… stared at the open vault. At the perfect decoy on the pedestal. He walked to the empty display, a strange look on his face. Not anger. It was… respect. The only thing missing was the one thing she came for. And in its place, on the velvet cloth… was a single, golden hair.
