Pip and the Impossible Shadows: Weekly Adventures Beyond Belief

The shadow of the town clock tower folded itself into a paper airplane. And just flew away. This was even weirder than last week, when Pip had to solve the Case of the Vanishing Reflections. At least then, things were just gone. Now… they were alive. A dog's shadow started chasing a cat's shadow—while the real animals were fast asleep! Pip saw it happen. Then a bicycle's shadow peeled itself off the pavement and slithered up a wall. It was hilarious! For about five minutes. Then it wasn't. Shadows started tying shoelaces together.

Trip. Whoops. Oof. People were falling everywhere. The shadow of a lamppost bent over and started gobbling up streetlights like spaghetti. The town square went dark. A little girl’s shadow ran away from her and hid at the top of a tree. She was crying, pointing. “My shadow! It left me!” It was total chaos! Everyone was scared. And the shadows… they just kept going. They were having the time of their lives. And their fun was getting dangerous. The shadow of the fire truck started spraying shadow water all over everything, making the whole world feel cold and damp.

Pip was hiding behind a mailbox, watching the shadow of a grumpy old badger terrorize the pigeons. But then Pip saw it. The shadows weren't just being mean. They were... playing. Badly. They were copying things they’d seen kids do. They were copying things they’d seen grown-ups do. They didn't know any better! And they were all attracted to the brightest things they could find—shiny doorknobs, car bumpers, store windows. They weren't running from the light. They were trying to get to it. Pip had an idea. A brilliant, dazzling, absolutely bonkers idea.

Pip ran to the center of the square. “EVERYONE! I NEED YOUR PHONES!” People stared. But they did it. One by one, they tossed their phones to Pip, who caught them like a juggling superstar. Pip turned on every single flashlight. Then, standing on the edge of the big stone fountain, Pip yelled, “HEY! SHADOWS! LOOK AT THIS!” A hundred tiny beams of light shot out from the fountain, pointing in every direction. It was like a supernova of selfies. The shadows stopped. Every single one of them. They turned. They saw the beautiful, wonderful light.

And with a great big WHOOSH, they raced towards it. As each beam of light passed over a person, their shadow snapped back into place. Click. Click. Click. The lamppost shadow spit out the streetlights. The little girl’s shadow slid down the tree and gave her a shadowy hug. The world was right again. It was quiet. And for just a second, before it settled back at Pip’s feet… Pip’s own shadow waved.
