To isolate one-tenth of a gram of radium chloride, Marie Curie had to process over a ton of pitchblende ore. That act of sheer, monumental effort announced the arrival of a new science, and a new kind of scientist. Last week, in Episode 10, we talked about uncovering voices found in the margins of history's turning points. This week… we found the entire journal. I'm holding what appears to be a small, leather-bound diary. It was found… well, it was found tucked inside a first edition of a textbook on mineralogy, in a dusty university archive in Paris.
The pages are brittle. The ink is a faint sepia. And for a long time, no one thought it was real. But the paper is right. The chemical composition of the ink is right.
