A miracle cure-all, sold by charlatans who understood nothing of its power. All while Marie Curie continued her grueling work, isolating that first pure decigram of radium chloride from over a ton of ore, a process that took her another four years of back-breaking labor.
Her notebooks, from that very shed, are still so radioactive today that they are stored in lead-lined boxes at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. To view them, you have to sign a waiver and wear protective clothing. The ghost of that beautiful glow lingers on the pages. She saw something new. Something that broke all the rules. She pursued it with a singular, ferocious dedication that is almost impossible to comprehend. She called it "the shining one." She saw a light in the darkness, and she gave it to the world, never knowing that the shadow it cast would fall across her own life.
