This week, we found another page. Last week, in our episode on lost letters, we talked about uncovering the private thoughts of public figures—the moments they never intended for the world to see. Today, we have something similar, yet different. Not a letter sent, but a diary kept. Tucked inside a dusty laboratory notebook from Paris, dated eighteen ninety-eight.

It appears to be an entry from Marie Skłodowska Curie, written on the very day she and her husband, Pierre, announced a discovery that would change the world. The discovery of radium. December twenty-sixth, eighteen ninety-eight. The paper is submitted. It is done. The words are sent to the Academy.

“Radium.” A name we chose for its radiance, for the light it gives without fire, without any known source of power. Now, there is only silence. The house is cold. Irène is sleeping. Pierre sits by the fire, not speaking, staring into the flames. I think he feels it too. This strange emptiness.

For four years, every thought, every ounce of strength has been bent toward this single purpose. And now… it is simply… over. Or it is just beginning. I cannot tell which. My body aches. Not the sharp pain of a fresh burn from a spilled acid, but a deep, settled weariness in my bones. I look at my hands.

The fingertips are permanently hardened, chapped, the skin crisscrossed with pale scars from a thousand tiny accidents with glass and metal and caustic solutions. They are not the hands of a lady. They are the hands of a laundress, or a factory worker. For years, that is what we were.

Our laboratory… to call it that gives it too much credit. It was an abandoned shed. A miserable old place with a leaky glass roof and a dirt floor. In summer, it was a furnace. In winter, like now, the cold seeped through the walls and we would have to keep moving, just to stay warm. I remember the tons of pitchblende arriving.

A mountain of dark, heavy earth, a gift of raw material from the mines in Bohemia. We had to crush it, dissolve it, filter it, crystallize it… over and over. A ton of ore to get a few decigrams of active material. We looked more like laborers than scientists, covered in dust and smoke, stirring boiling vats with an iron rod almost as big as I am.

Pierre focused on the physical properties. I, on the chemical separations. Hour after hour. Day after day. Forgetting to eat. Forgetting the world outside our little shed. There were times I was so tired I would put my head down on the table for just a moment, and wake to find the sun had set.

There were times I thought we were chasing a ghost. The radiation we were measuring was so powerful, so much stronger than in Monsieur Becquerel’s uranium salts, yet the substance itself was invisible. Elusive. We would separate the barium from the pitchblende, and find the activity was concentrated there.

But it was not barium. It was something else. Something… new. We called it radium. And we had to prove it existed. We had to isolate it. That was the work of this last year. A Sisyphean task. Boiling, stirring, separating. My lungs burn just thinking of the fumes. But the work held a fascination that I cannot properly explain.

It was a hunt. A hunt for a single, unknown element hidden in a mountain of dross. The true moment… the one that I will carry with me forever… it did not happen in the light of day. It was not a number on a page or a successful measurement on the electrometer. It was at night. We had finished a grueling day of crystallization.

Everything was put away. We were walking home, exhausted, through the dark Paris streets. And then Pierre stopped. He turned to me. He said, “Let’s go back. I want to see what it looks like in the dark.” So we did. We unlocked the door to our cold, dark shed. We stood there for a moment, letting our eyes adjust.

And then… we saw them. Faint, blue-green, ghost-lights… hanging in the dark. All around the room. On the tables, on the shelves, in the small glass dishes where we had left the concentrated products of our work. They glowed. They shone with their own internal light. The darkness of the room was alive with them.

It was beautiful. So beautiful it made my breath catch in my throat. It was like standing in a field of faint, magical stars we had created ourselves. We did not speak. We just stood there, together, watching them. In that moment, I understood. This was not just another element on a chart.

This was something else entirely. It breaks the rules. It pours out energy, endlessly, from nothing. It is a sun in a bottle. Where does the energy come from? The old laws of physics say it is impossible. That energy cannot be created from nothing. And yet… here it is. Glowing in my laboratory.

This is the part that fills me with a feeling I can only describe as dread. It is one thing to discover a new metal, like gallium. It is another thing entirely to discover a new source of power. A new fire. A fire that does not need fuel and does not seem to ever go out. The paper we submitted today is precise.

Scientific. It details the process, the spectral lines, the atomic weight we have estimated. It makes no mention of ghost-lights or feelings of dread. It is a report. But what does it report, really? We have found something that can burn away diseased tissue. Pierre and I have both sustained burns on our skin simply from handling the more active samples.

It could be a great weapon against tumors, against sickness. This is my greatest hope. That this power can be used to heal. But a power that can destroy diseased cells can surely destroy healthy ones, too. A fire that can warm can also consume. I am a scientist. I must deal in facts and evidence, not in premonitions.

But I am also human. I have seen the way men use power. I have seen it in my native Poland, under the heel of Russia. I have seen it here in France. We have lit a lamp. A lamp that shines with a light never before seen on Earth. Tonight, I feel the immense weight of that lamp in my hands.

It is a profound and terrifying privilege. I pray the world uses its light to see, and not to burn.
