We had exactly seven hundred and twelve dollars saved in the Kyoto jar. It was a glass pickle jar with a slot cut in the metal lid, and for two years, it was the center of our universe. Every plan, every decision, was measured against it. “That’s half a night in a ryokan,” we’d say, putting a twenty-dollar bill through the slot instead of ordering takeout. That jar wasn’t just money. It was proof. Proof that we were the kind of people who could build a future together, one crumpled bill at a time. This is the part I keep coming back to. Our apartment walls were covered in maps of the Higashiyama District. I downloaded an app to learn basic Japanese phrases; you bought a cookbook and tried, once, to make ramen from scratch. It was a disaster. But even the failure felt like progress, like a funny story we’d tell one day in a noodle bar on Pontocho Alley. We’ve seen this pattern before, in other places. A startup so focused on the series A funding round that it forgets to build a sustainable business. A political campaign that masters the art of winning an election but has no plan for governing. The goal becomes so bright, so all-consuming, that it blinds you to the present.

It creates the illusion of momentum. The feeling of moving forward, together. The most stable we ever felt was when we were living entirely in a future that hadn’t happened yet. All our energy was directed at this perfect, imaginary trip. The project was the relationship. And every project has an end date. The Kyoto jar is probably in a box in my parents’ attic.
