The last time I knew it was over was when you bought the gray towels. That’s what it comes down to. You came home with a new set, neatly folded in a plastic bag, and replaced the mismatched, sun-faded ones we’d had for six years. It wasn’t a decision we made together. It was just a thing you did. And I’m trying to walk that back. To find the step that came before the towels.

Before that, I think it was the silence in the car. We used to talk—about anything, about nothing. Then, somewhere last winter, the music just got turned up a little louder. And neither of us turned it down. It was easier that way. It’s the same pattern you see when a company starts to fail. First, the memos stop being shared. Then the all-hands meetings get canceled.

The information just… stops flowing. We stopped flowing. Before the silence, there was that night in October. You’d had a terrible day at work—your boss, a project, I can’t even remember the details now. You came home looking for a fight, or maybe just for a place to put all that anger. And I didn’t give you one. I just… agreed. I nodded.

I said "you're right" and went to bed. I thought I was de-escalating. I see now I was just refusing to engage. I was refusing to be the person you could test yourself against. A bridge has to have two anchor points. That night, I let my side go slack. And tracing it back even from there… I land on that text message. From two years ago.

I was out with friends, you were home, and you sent a picture of the first star you could see in the sky. Just the picture, no words. And I saw it. But I was in the middle of a story, a loud bar, and I thought… I’ll reply in a minute. And by the time I did, hours later, you just sent back a thumbs-up emoji. The window was closed. That was the moment.

That was the hairline fracture in the foundation. Everything that came after was just the structure slowly, quietly giving way. It’s strange. Because all of that—the silence, the towels, the arguments we didn’t have—it all started from a place that had none of it. It started on a rainy Tuesday, under the awning of a bookstore, when you offered me half of your umbrella.

You didn’t even have a good reason to be kind to a stranger. You just were. We walked three blocks, talking the whole way, and your umbrella was this ridiculous, bright yellow thing against a gray sky. We started with all the color in the world.
