A standard locomotive horn has four separate chimes, tuned to a diminished seventh chord. In our last episode, we found a universe of stories locked inside an old brass key; today, we find one in a chord that travels for miles through the dark. It always began the same way. A single, low note cutting through the static of the crickets outside his window. Then the other notes would join it, a lonely, hanging chord that meant a train was crossing the old trestle bridge, five miles out of town.

He was eight years old. Tucked into a bed that felt like a small boat on a vast, dark ocean. And he had a job to do. His father was on that train. That’s what his mother had said. “Coming home soon.” And the boy decided that “soon” meant tonight. On THAT train. The ten-eighteen freight from the city. So he listened. He waited. And when the whistle blew, he started the ritual. First, you hear the horn. Then you count. You count the seconds until you feel the rumble—a deep, patient vibration that you feel in your teeth before you feel it in the floor.

The number is everything. Last week it was twelve seconds. The week before, eleven. If he could just count it right… if the number was right… then in the morning, his father’s old leather bag would be by the door. His worn-out boots would be next to it. And the house would feel full again. The whistle faded. The crickets returned. He held his breath. One. Two. Three. He strained to feel the vibration, imagining the massive weight of the engine, the clatter of a hundred boxcars full of things going somewhere else.

Seven. Eight. Nine. Still nothing. Just silence and the blood pounding in his ears. His count was getting too high. It was wrong. He’d messed it up. Panic, cold and sharp, pricked at his skin. Twelve. Thirteen. Fourteen. And then he heard it. Not a rumble in the floorboards. But a new sound. A car door, slamming shut in the driveway. Footsteps on the gravel path. A key, turning in the lock downstairs. He never made it to fifteen. He was out of the bed, a blur of flannel pajamas, halfway down the stairs before the living room light even clicked on.

He’s a man now. He doesn’t live in that house anymore. But sometimes, late at night, a distant train will send that same diminished seventh chord out into the darkness. And he doesn’t hear a train. He hears the exact sound of a fourteen-second silence. He feels the weight of a hope so heavy it could stop your heart. And he feels the indescribable lightness that comes right after. The sound isn’t a memory of a train. It’s the memory of everything he ever learned about waiting… and what it feels like to finally stop.
