A security guard walks an average of seven miles a night, just pacing the same empty halls. It's another story from the quiet corners of our world, about the people who watch over us while we sleep. His name was Arthur, and his kingdom was the Meridian Tower after everyone else went home. For thirty years, he’d walked its twenty-two floors. He knew the hum of the HVAC system on seventeen, the ghost flicker of the fluorescent light in the third-floor men's room. He knew the building's secrets. And lately, he'd learned one of its people's secrets, too. Her name was Clara. A junior designer on the ninth floor. For the past three weeks, her desk lamp was a lone star in the building’s dark constellation. Long past midnight. Arthur saw it on his first round, his second, his third.

Through the glass, he saw the mountain of paper. The frantic sketches. The half-eaten salads in their plastic containers. One night, he saw her reflection in the dark window, her face buried in her hands. The next, he saw a project timeline on her whiteboard. A huge, impossible deadline circled in red. Underneath it, in small, shaky letters: “I can’t.” He felt a pang. He wasn't supposed to interfere. His job was to observe. To report. A broken window, a suspicious vehicle... not a broken spirit. Then came the final night before the deadline. It was 3 a.m. Arthur stepped off the elevator on nine, and saw her. She wasn't working. She was slumped in her chair, fast asleep, her cheek pressed against a stack of proofs. The screen saver on her monitor was a swirling galaxy of color.

Utterly defeated. He stood there for a long moment, the only sound the soft jingle of his keys. He could just walk away. Note it in the log. But he didn't. Instead, he went down to the lobby kitchen. He took out his own thermos, poured his own coffee—the cheap instant kind—into a clean ceramic mug from the lost and found. He added two sugar packets and a splash of milk from the communal fridge. He carried it back up to the ninth floor, his footsteps silent on the carpet. He placed the mug gently on her desk, next to her keyboard. On a small sticky note, he wrote just three words. “One more round.” He never saw her reaction. He just continued his patrol. But the next week, her desk was dark by seven p.m. And the week after that. Arthur just kept walking his seven miles, a guardian not just of the building, but of the quiet hopes inside it.
