This week, we’re going to live inside one of those silences, where every pause is the difference between the sky and the ground. Okay, honey. Just breathe. I'm right here. Can you hear me? Good. Now, do NOT look at him. Look straight ahead, out the window. At the horizon. The line where the blue meets the brown.
Keep the plane's nose right on it. Can you do that for me? Good girl. You're flying a plane, Sarah. Now, find the big wheel in front of you. The... the steering wheel thing. That's the yoke. Gentle. VERY small movements. It's sensitive. Feel how it responds? Good. To your right, there are two handles. One black, one red. The black one is the throttle. That's your speed. We don't touch that yet. We need to find you first. No, I... I don't know where you are.
But you have a radio. Find the button on the yoke. Right under your thumb. Press it and say Mayday. Three times. Just "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday." They answered? Oh, thank god. Okay. Tell them your father is on the phone. They'll... they'll know who I am. They will find you on their radar. Okay, they see you. They see you, honey! There's a small airfield about ten miles ahead. You're running on fumes, Sarah. We have to do this right the FIRST time. You see the lights?
Two white, two red? That's perfect. That means you're on the right path. Keep them just like that. Whoa, whoa, you're dropping too fast! Pull back on the yoke! PULL BACK! Not that much! Okay. Okay, you corrected. You're over the runway now. The concrete. Cut the power. The black handle. Pull it ALL the way out. Now. Just... hold it steady. Hold it steady and PULL back on the yoke... keep pulling... keep pulling... Sarah? Talk to me, honey. What happened? You're down.
Oh, you're down. You did it. You landed a plane. No, don't do anything. Just sit there. And breathe. They'll be right there. I hear them now. I hear the sirens.
