A felony conviction stays on your record for life in forty-three states. Last week’s episode was about silence speaking volumes, and... I don’t think I knew what that meant until right now. Sam? Please pick up. Sam. Oh thank god. Don’t hang up. Just… give me sixty seconds. That's all I'm asking. I know where you are. I know what you’re about to do. And I am telling you, BEGGING you, do not walk into that courtroom. No. No, it is not too late. It’s not too late until you sign the paper. It’s just a piece of paper until then.
Because it’s a lie! It’s not ‘just a few years.’ Do you hear yourself? This follows you, Sam. It becomes your first name. Every job application, every apartment rental. You will be explaining this day for the rest of your life. Stop saying you’re fine! You are NOT fine! You are about to set your entire life on fire, and you’re calling it ‘fine’? He’s your brother, I KNOW. But this isn’t what protecting him looks like. Remember when you broke your arm falling out of the oak tree? And you told Mom and Dad that YOU climbed up there to get my kite, so I wouldn't get in trouble?
This is that, Sam. Only this time, the bone doesn't heal. There's no cast to take off in six weeks. He told you it was the only way? Of course he did. It’s the only way for HIM. I talked to someone else. A public defender, a good one. She looked at the file. She said the security footage is GARBAGE. They can’t prove who was driving. It’s his word against… well, nothing. If you just don’t say anything. If you just let her do her job. We’ll get the money for a better lawyer. I swear. I’ll sell the car.
I’ll take a second job, a third one. We can figure this part out. We always do. But we can’t UNDO this. There IS no after. What do you mean, you have to go? No. Don’t you say that to me. Don’t you DARE say goodbye. Sam? Who is that? Is that your lawyer? Let me talk to him! Put him BACK on the phone! Sir? Sir, you can’t let him do this! He doesn’t understand what he’s signing! He’s just a kid! What did you say? It’s… it’s already done? No. There’s… nothing else to say. Yeah. I’m here. I’m just looking out my window.
They’re washing the courthouse steps across the street. Getting them clean for the morning.
