Okay, listen. The key is not under the mat. It’s in the terracotta pot with the dead fern, the third one from the door. I know this is a lot to ask, especially on the phone, where all you’re getting is my voice and a lot of... quiet from your end. It feels one-sided, I know. No, no, don't apologize. Just… can you get inside? Good. Okay. You know the layout. It's in the bedroom. On the nightstand. My side. It’s the little wooden bird, the one with the chipped wing. My grandfather made it. Yes, that's it. That's all. Nothing else. Don't touch anything else.
Don't look at anything else. Just the bird. Put it in your pocket and walk out. He's not there. He won't be. It's Tuesday. You know what Tuesday is. He’s at the track until at least ten, and he never, ever leaves early if he's losing. And he's always losing. You'll be in and out in less than two minutes. The whole building is empty this time of day. Please. I wouldn't ask if it wasn't… What do you mean, why? It's... it's the bird. You know what it means to me. No. No, it's not just a thing. It's not something I can replace. It’s not like the lamp you broke in college, remember?
You can't just go to the store and buy another one of my grandfather's hands. Just… please. I can hear you breathing. Just say you'll do it. Because I can't. Okay? I can't go back. And he doesn't know I'm gone yet. He just thinks I'm working late. But he knows… he knows I would never, ever go anywhere overnight without that bird. It's stupid, I know. But if he gets home, and he sees it's still there… he'll know I just forgot it. He'll think I'm coming back. But if it's gone… if the bird is gone… he'll know I'm not. He'll know it's real this time.
And he'll start looking. I just need a few more hours before he starts looking. Okay. Okay, thank you. I know. I owe you. More than I can say. Are you… are you walking to the bedroom now? Okay. Be quick. You have it? Don't describe it, just… you have it? Good. Now walk out. Don't run. Just walk. Get in your car. And drive. Call me when you're on the main road. Not before. Okay. One more thing. When you leave… just leave the door unlocked. Don't lock it behind you.
