I'm holding the photograph, Aunt Mae. The one from the cedar chest. The one that isn't ripped. It's funny, I was just thinking about how some stories are told in the empty spaces, in the unheard lines… and you’re being very, very quiet. No, I'm not trying to cause trouble. I'm just… looking at it. At him. The man standing next to Grandma. You always said he was just a friend of Grandpa’s from the service.
But I’ve been going through all the old albums, the boxes you gave me. And in every other picture… he’s gone. Just a torn edge where he used to be. Why would you tear out a friend? I don’t believe you don’t remember. Your memory is better than mine. You can name every single person at your third-grade birthday party. So don't tell me you can't remember the man who is standing with his arm almost touching my grandmother’s in a dozen photographs.
Are you still there? Okay. Okay, I'm sorry. I won't yell. Just... talk to me. Was he in love with her? Is that it? Was this some big secret romance before she married Grandpa? 'It was complicated.' Everything from your generation was 'complicated'. That's the word you use to lock the door. I'm not a child anymore, Mae. I’m just trying to understand who we are. And it feels like a piece is missing.
A deliberately removed piece. What? No, I'm looking at it right now. Under the magnifying lamp from Dad's desk. The details are so clear. Grandma’s dress, the one with the little blue flowers. Grandpa looking so proud in his uniform. And the other man… his name was Arthur. You said his name was Arthur once, years ago. You told me to forget it. I never did. Wait. Wait a second.
He's… he’s wearing a ring. A simple gold band. On his left hand. And Grandma… she isn’t looking at the camera. She’s not even looking at Grandpa. She’s looking at Arthur. In every single picture I’ve ever seen of the three of them… she is always looking at him. What do you mean, ‘He had to go away’? Why? Why did he have to go? People don't just 'go away'. Oh. Oh, god. That silence.
You finally did it. You told me everything with that silence. Grandpa didn’t have a rival. He had a predecessor. That ring… wasn't for someone else. It was for her. He wasn’t the friend. Grandpa was. Grandpa was the friend who stayed. Arthur… Arthur was supposed to be my grandfather. So this whole time. This whole family is built on a lie we all agreed to tell ourselves.
On a story you perfected by tearing up the evidence. What was his last name? You can tell me that. Just his name. Fine. Don't. It doesn't matter. I know what to look for now. I know whose story I need to find. I have to go. I need to put this picture down.
