Her finger traced the faded ink. Last week, secrets spilled in the salt air of a coastal diner. This week, they are buried in paper and dust. The book was heavy in her lap. A town ledger, from an age of fountain pens and careful cursive. The local history room was small, tucked into the back of the library. It smelled of brittle paper and time itself. Elara had been here for three days. The same table. The same single-minded focus. She was not browsing. She was hunting. "Finding what you're looking for?" The voice was quiet.
Warm. She hadn't heard him approach. An older man, with kind eyes and a volunteer's badge pinned to his cardigan. Thomas. She’d seen him at the main desk. "Just looking," she said. A little too quickly. He smiled gently. "This section doesn't get many lookers. Mostly searchers. People trying to find a root, or dig one up." He gestured to the ledger. "That's a heavy piece of the past to be carrying." Elara closed the book. The sound was a soft thud in the silence. "I'm new to town. Just… curious." "It's a town worth being curious about," Thomas said.
He didn't move closer. He just stood, patient. "What year are you in?" She hesitated. "Nineteen thirty-four." "Ah," he nodded, a flicker of something in his eyes. "The year of the mill fire. A bad winter." He paused. "A lot of records went missing that night. Smoke damage. Water damage. Some things just… vanished." "So I've noticed," Elara said, her voice tight. The official reports were thin. Pages were missing. Not torn out, just gone. An absence where a story should be. "It seems… incomplete." He leaned against the opposite bookshelf.
"Fires do that. They burn the truth right out of the paper. Sometimes they burn it out of people, too." The air shifted. This was no longer just small talk. "What name are you looking for?" he asked, his voice still soft. Still kind. But the question landed like a stone. It was the ONE question she couldn't answer. Not truthfully. "I don't have a name," she finally managed to say. It was a half-truth. "I have a date. And a place." Thomas watched her. He seemed to be measuring her words. "Well," he said, pushing off the shelf.
"That makes it harder. But not impossible." He started to turn away, then stopped. "My family has been here a long time," he added, almost an afterthought. "Some stories… they aren't written in the books. They're just remembered." He gave her another small, unreadable smile, and then he was gone, his footsteps silent on the worn carpet. Elara sat perfectly still. She looked down at the closed ledger on the table. For three days, this room had been a sanctuary. A quiet archive where she could hunt for a ghost in peace.
Now, it felt different. It felt watched. The man wasn't just a friendly volunteer offering help. He was a gatekeeper. He was telling her, in his own quiet way, that she was in the right place. And that she was NOT alone. She was no longer just searching for a piece of the past. The past was now searching for her. The silence of the library was gone. Replaced by the sound of a single, unanswered question.
