The SS Ancon, a simple cargo and passenger steamer, completed its journey on August fifteenth, 1914. It passed through a series of massive, water-filled chambers in Central America, becoming the first ship to officially transit the Panama Canal. In our last episode, Admin, we talked about the dawn of print culture with Europe's first named book from 1457, a revolution in sharing ideas. Today, we look at a revolution of a different sort — one of earth and water, a project that physically remade the globe by splitting a continent in two. From our vantage point, the Panama Canal seems like a historical inevitability.
A testament to early twentieth-century American ambition. But looking back, what we see now is that the canal wasn't a story about engineering. Not really. It was a story about biology, and about hubris. The French had tried first, led by Ferdinand de Lesseps, the hero of the Suez Canal. He thought he could simply repeat his success. He was wrong. The jungle was not the desert. Yellow fever and malaria, carried by mosquitos, tore through the workforce. They were trying to solve an engineering problem while being decimated by a biological one they didn't even understand. After nearly a decade, and the loss of over twenty thousand lives, the French project collapsed in financial ruin and scandal.
When the Americans took over in 1904, the key decision wasn't about what kind of diggers to use. It was putting a doctor, Colonel William C. Gorgas, in charge of sanitation BEFORE the real digging began. He understood the new, radical theory that mosquitos, not bad air, were the enemy. He launched a war on them. Fumigation, draining swamps, screening windows. It was a massive, expensive, and frankly, unpopular campaign. The engineers just wanted to move dirt. But Gorgas held the line. And he won. On this same day, August fifteenth, but back in 1769, Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the island of Corsica. And when we think of Napoleon, we think of the general. The Emperor. At Ohio State University's Big Ear radio telescope, an astronomer named Jerry Ehman was reviewing printouts of data from the search for extraterrestrial intelligence—SETI.
The telescope scanned the sky, and a computer printed out a long sheet of papers covered in single digits and letters, representing the intensity of radio signals from different parts of space. It was, for the most part, deeply monotonous work. But on this day, he saw something that made him sit up straight. From the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, the telescope had recorded a 72-second-long signal of extraordinary strength.
