The shadow on Leo’s wall had long, spindly arms. It wasn’t a quiet noise, like the midnight creak Maya heard in her room last week. This was a creature, right there on the wall, and it was… doing a wobbly little jig. One long arm went up, then the other. It swayed its hips. Leo pulled the blanket up to his nose. His heart went thump-thump-thump against his ribs. Monsters were NOT supposed to dance. Under the covers, the world was small and safe. But also… a little boring. And warm.
Too warm. He peeked one eye over the edge of the blanket. The shadow was still there. It wiggled its fingers, which looked suspiciously like long, thin branches. Was it waving at him? It definitely was. Leo ducked back under. Okay. This was a problem. A dancing, waving shadow monster. You can’t just hide from that. You have to investigate. That’s what a brave explorer would do. Slowly, sooooo slowly, Leo pushed the blanket away. The air in the room was cool on his face. The floorboards were even cooler under his feet.
One step. Two steps. He crept toward the wall where the monster was having its silent party. The closer he got, the bigger and fuzzier the shadow became. It didn’t look so scary up close. It just looked… blurry. Leo reached out a hand, his own shadow joining the dance on the wall. He touched the dancing shape. It was just… wall. Cold, flat, painted wall. He turned around. His eyes followed the beam of moonlight that was shining through his window. It was like a bright white road.
A road that started at the moon, crossed his floor, and ended… right on his desk chair. And what was on his desk chair? A pile of things he’d left there before bed. A stack of three library books. And sitting right on top of the books… was his baseball glove. Its fingers were sticking up in the air. The moonlight hit the glove, and THERE was the monster. The dancing? Leo looked out the window. The big oak tree in the yard was swaying gently in the breeze, making the moonlight flicker.
It wasn’t a monster doing a jig. It was a tree, dancing with his baseball glove. Leo laughed. He walked over to the chair and picked up the glove. On the wall, the monster waved a frantic goodbye and vanished. He put his toy Tyrannosaurus Rex in the beam of light instead. Now, a giant, friendly dinosaur loomed on the wall, its tiny arms looking very unscary. He was the director of his own shadow puppet show. Leo climbed back into bed, leaving the T-Rex on guard. The room wasn’t haunted.
It was a movie theater. And he was in charge of what was playing.
