The little leaf let go. He had held on all through the sunny days. And through the rainy ones too. His name was Leafy. And he was ready for an adventure. A soft night breeze whispered, "It's time. Come with me." So he did. He tumbled once, then twice, a tiny green acrobat in the dark. Then he was floating. Soaring. The big oak tree he called home looked smaller and smaller. And the whole world opened up below. He felt a little flutter in his stem.
Not a scared flutter. A curious one. An excited one. He remembered a story we told, about a little glow-worm named Luma. She had searched the whole garden for the PERFECT cozy bed. Leafy wondered… where would his bed be tonight? The wind was his quiet guide. It carried him over the sleeping garden. He saw the moon, a big friendly scoop of vanilla ice cream in the dark, dark sky. And the stars… oh, the stars were like spilled glitter.
They winked down at him. "Hello," he whispered back. He floated past the quiet pond. The water was like a black mirror, holding a perfect copy of the moon. A frog croaked a deep, rumbly goodnight. Ribbit. He saw a family of ducks all tucked in, heads under their wings, floating gently near the reeds. He heard the sleepy orchestra of the night. Crickets chirped their soft rhythm. An owl hooted from far away. Hoo-hoo. It wasn't a scary sound.
It was just the owl saying, "I'm here. All is well." The world was so BIG from up here. And so peaceful. He saw a field mouse skittering through the tall grass, a tiny shadow on a mission. The mouse looked up and wiggled its nose, as if to say hello on its way. Leafy dipped down low, almost touching the top of a fluffy dandelion clock. He wondered if he blew on it, would all the seeds fly away and have their own adventures too?
Then the breeze lifted him up again. Higher and higher. He danced with a little Luna moth, whose wings were the color of pale moonlight. They twirled together for a moment, two silent dancers in the great ballroom of the sky. Then the moth fluttered away, toward the woods. Leafy was all alone again. Floating in the great, wide, wonderful night. Where oh where would he land? Then, something changed. The breeze, his gentle friend, began to slow down.
It gave him one last, gentle puff. A little goodbye kiss. It wasn't pushing him up anymore. It was letting him go. He began to drift down. Down… down… down. Slowly… gently… like a tiny green boat on a calm, invisible river. The sky in the east had a tiny blush of pink and soft orange. Dawn was yawning and stretching, getting ready to paint the world with light. Leafy looked below. He saw a patch of something green. Not leaf-green.
But a deep, soft, velvety green. It looked like a tiny, plush carpet nestled between the roots of a great big mushroom. He drifted the last little bit. And landed with a soft… poof. Oh. It was the softest moss he had ever felt. It was cool and damp and smelled like sweet earth and morning dew. Tucked right beside him was a snail. Its shell was a beautiful swirl of brown and gold, shining in the first light. The snail was fast asleep in its cozy, portable home.
A single drop of dew sat on Leafy's tip, like a tiny crystal jewel. He wasn't on his branch anymore. He wasn't on his big oak tree. He was somewhere new. But he was safe. He was cozy. He had traveled all night and seen the secret, sleeping world. And now, he had found the perfect place to rest. The little leaf closed his eyes. The first ray of sun warmed him like a blanket. And he dreamed of dancing with the stars.
