Misty’s tiny wings trembled with excitement. A silver path stretched down from the moon. It landed right on the tip of her leaf. Just last night, she had watched Leafy the ladybug soar through the garden. A tiny, brave adventurer on a night flight. If a ladybug could have an adventure, maybe a little moth could too. She wanted to dance on that moonbeam. More than anything in the whole wide world. She took a tiny breath. And pushed off from the leaf.
Up, up, she fluttered. Her wings were like powdered sugar, dusty and white. They felt so strong. But a sudden puff of night air tumbled her down, down, down. It wasn't a scary fall. It was gentle, like a falling blossom. She landed softly in the middle of a big, white flower. It had just opened up for the night. Someone was humming inside. A deep, sleepy buzz. A big, fuzzy bumblebee was curled up, fast asleep. "Oh, pardon me," Misty whispered. The bee opened one sleepy eye.
"Lost, little one?" he rumbled, his voice warm and low. "I'm trying to reach the moonbeam," she said, her voice small. The bee chuckled, a kind, fuzzy sound. "The moon is a long way away," he buzzed. "But its light… its light is right here with you." Misty didn't quite understand. But she thanked the sleepy bee and flew out of the flower. This time, she watched the air. She found a gentle current that was rising up. It carried her higher than before.
Soon, she was level with the treetops. She landed on a branch to rest. A wise old owl was sitting there, blinking slowly. His eyes were like two golden moons. He wasn't scary at all. "Hello," the owl hooted, his voice like a soft flute in the dark. "You are flying very high, little moth." "I want to dance on the moonbeam," Misty told him proudly. The owl tilted his great, feathery head. "Ah," he said. "I see." He looked at her with his big, kind eyes.
"A moonbeam is not a floor for dancing on." "It is light for dancing in." In. Not on. Suddenly, Misty understood. She flew off the branch and straight into the silver path of light. And just like that, she was surrounded by magic. She wasn't standing on anything at all. She was floating. The air held her up. The light filled the space all around her. The dust on her wings began to glitter. She looked like she was made of a thousand tiny stars. She twirled.
She dipped. She danced inside the beautiful, silvery light. It was more wonderful than she had EVER dreamed. After a long, happy dance, her little wings felt tired. She floated back down, down, down. The moonbeam followed her. She landed on her own familiar leaf, right where she started. The moonbeam was still there, shining on her. It wasn't a place she had to travel to. It was a gift that came right to her. She curled up, tucking her head under her sparkling wing.
And as the moon watched over the quiet garden, little Misty drifted off to sleep. Now, it's your turn to rest. Goodnight.
