The little calyx snapped softly. Pull your covers up to your chin first, sweetheart. Snuggle in deep, just like when Dewy the dew drop slipped down that shiny ivy vine yesterday morning. There we go. All warm. Pip let go of the stem. He was a tiny, striped sunflower seed, wearing a jacket like brown velvet. He wanted to see where the autumn air was heading. The mother plant leaned low, whispering goodbye with a rustle of dry, sleepy leaves. Pip held his breath. A slow current caught him under his coat. It lifted him up, easy as a feather from an old down pillow.
Up, past the nodding marigolds. Up, past the porch where the wooden rocking chair sat still. The garden looked entirely different from up high. Pip saw a red wheelbarrow full of dry pine needles. He saw a sleepy beetle curling into a ball under a cracked clay pot. Everything below was tucking in for the evening. The air carried him gently, sweeping sideways across the quiet yard. Pip wanted to fly forever. The sky tasted like cold water and dried mint. But the wind began to thin, letting out a long, slow sigh. Down came the breeze, brushing through the top branches of an apple tree.
Pip drifted through the branches, touching one red cheek of an apple on his way past. He was falling, but it didn't feel like falling at all. It felt like floating down through a feather bed. The trouble was, the stones below looked very hard. Pip watched the gray cobblestones of the garden path rush up to meet him. A little seed needs sweet earth, not cold rock. He twisted his coat, hoping for one more lift. Just then, a friendly gust slipped out from behind the tool shed. It caught Pip by his pointy tip and nudged him two feet to the left.
Plink. Pip landed softly in a patch of black earth beside the old stone birdbath. The soil was damp and crumbly, smelling rich and warm like cocoa powder. It gave under his weight like a brand-new mattress. Two brown oak leaves drifted down right after him. They settled over Pip, crisscrossing like blankets pulled up high on a chilly evening. "Stay here," the damp ground hummed against his shell. "Rest a while," the oak leaves murmured. Pip wiggled just an inch deeper. The grit tucked in around his sides, holding him snug and secure. Up above, the first evening star blinked into the lavender sky, quiet and cold.
But down here, under the leaves, everything was warm. Pip closed his eyes. He had thought flying was the greatest adventure a seed could ever have. But as he relaxed into the darkness, he felt a slow, sleepy pulse deep inside his shell. He wasn't finished moving at all. He wasn't just resting in the dark dirt. He was getting ready. Under his leaf blanket, Pip began to dream of yellow petals, bright and wide as the summer sun. He would wait here through the winter, drinking in the quiet, until it was time to stretch his green arms toward the clouds.
Close your eyes now, darling. Just like Pip in his cozy earth bed. Goodnight, sweet dreams, and sleep tight.
