A single firefly can make a light that is almost one hundred percent pure energy. It’s a perfect little lamp, with no heat at all. Last night, we drifted with Ripple the water drop, and tonight, we’ll meet a little spark who saw his reflection in a dewdrop Ripple left behind on a clover leaf. His name was Flicker. He was a very small firefly, with a very small light. He sat on a blade of grass, watching the garden settle in for the night. The big, bright faces of the sunflowers were all tucked down, sleeping.

The air smelled sweet, like jasmine and cool, damp earth. Above him, the moon was a giant pearl in the dark sky. Flicker blinked his light on. Then off. He looked at his tiny glow, and then up at the big, bright moon. He wanted to be BIG and BRIGHT like that. He felt his little blink was… well, not enough. So he lifted his tiny wings, which made a sound like whispering secrets, and flew up into the quiet air. He flew past a rosebush, where the flowers were curled up tight, like little pink fists.

He zipped over the smooth, grey stones of the garden path. But everywhere he went, the darkness felt so BIG, and his light felt so very, very small. He was about to fly back to his leaf, feeling a little sad, when he saw a flutter near a big, dark bush. It was a moth, with wings the color of dust and moonlight. The moth was circling and circling. "Hello!" blinked Flicker with his light. The moth stopped. A tiny, worried voice whispered, "Oh.

Hello. I'm a little bit lost." Flicker flew closer. "Lost? But the moon is right up there," he said, blinking his light toward the sky. The moth drooped its antennae. "The leaves of this bush are in my way. I can't see it. I was trying to find the white moonflower. It only opens at night, and it's my favorite place to rest." Flicker looked at his own tiny light, pulsing in the darkness. It wasn't the moon, no. But for the little moth, right here, right now… it was the only light there was.

An idea sparked inside him. "Wait right there!" he blinked. "You can't see the moon, but you can see ME. Follow my light!" So Flicker flew slowly, just ahead of the dusty moth. His small light was like a tiny, floating star, leading the way. He bobbed and weaved around the dark leaves, his light blinking a steady, cheerful rhythm. On… and off. On… and off. Finally, they came around the bush. And there it was. A huge, white flower, glowing in the moonlight, its petals open like a beautiful cup.

The lost moth gave a happy little flutter. "Oh, thank you!" the moth whispered, settling onto a soft petal. "Your light… it was the most beautiful light in the whole world." Flicker felt a warmth spread through his chest that had nothing to do with his lamp. His light wasn't the biggest, or the brightest. But it had been EXACTLY what someone needed. He blinked a happy goodbye to his new friend and flew back through the sleeping garden. He found his own special leaf, right next to his family of other blinking fireflies.

He settled down, feeling cozy and content. He blinked his light, slow and sleepy now. A tiny, warm heartbeat of light in the vast, quiet night.
